OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion has only been available for 48hours but that’s not preventing many Mac owners from already upgrading. The $20 price tag, combined with easy download access via the Mac App Store has led to an incredible rate of adoption by Mac owners across the globe, and it might be on pace to be one of the most quickly adopted operating systems ever.
A new traffic report released by Chitika this morning shows that more than 3% of Mac users surfing the web have already installed Mountain Lion. Estimates are claiming that about 2.11 million Mac users downloaded OS X 10.8 within the first 48 hours of its release.
Apple has yet to release any official figures on the adoption rate of Mountain Lion, but based on June’s announcement that there are currently 66 million Mac users in the world, we can take the 3% figure provided by Chitika to estimate how many times Mountain Lion was download, which is where Chitika got the figure of 2.11 million downloads.
It’s hard to calculate how much money Apple earned from the Mountain Lion launch because users can upgrade all of their personal Macs using a single copy of the $19.99 operating system. Last year Apple announced that 1 million Mac users had downloaded OS X 10.7 Lion within 24 hours of release, so we might be able to expect a similar announcement in the next few days with official numbers from Cupertino.

Even though it doubled in a year for downloads within 24 hours, it’s a small number in the OS X Fragmentation. How many users still use 10.7, 10.6, 10.5 … ?

At Low End Mac, Mountain Lion already accounts for 20% of our Mac traffic, closing on Snow Leopard (down from 30% to 25% since 10.8 was released) and Lion (down from nearly 50% to 36%). That’s the fastest I’ve ever seen a new version of the Mac OS adopted!
I really can’t think of any reason to stay on Lion. I understand if people are sticking with Snow Leopard (sorta) but Mountain Lion really polishes up Lion.
