Michael Fassbender is a lot of things: actor, producer, Magneto … but one thing he isn’t is on the cutting edge of technology.
The man playing Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic from director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) confessed in a recent interview that he is a little behind the times, phone-wise.
“I’m still on my iPhone 4,” Fassbender told Variety , adding, “The 4 is my favorite design” before the interviewer pointed out that his phone looked broken.
“But it still works. The cover actually broke off my broken phone.”
The actor’s attachment to his obsolete iPhone is a decidedly un-Apple attitude toward technology and consumers’ tendency to gravitate toward the newest and shiniest new gear; never mind the fact that the three models released after the 4 are remarkably similar in design. But he says that he tends to “use something until it’s no longer usable.”
Luckily for all of us, however, Fassbender is a really good actor. We’ll probably buy him as Jobs even knowing that he’s incapable of running iOS 8.

He’s in good company then, I still use my 4s with a cracked screen. I like the form factor (small, petite hands) and iOS 8 works on it.
Yes, I was a fangirl who stood in line the first day to get an original iPhone.
I mentioned this in a similar article, but the iPhone 4 was the last iPhone released during Steve’s life. Having an affinity with this particular design may help the actor better align with his mindset.
Meh, it’s cyclical with many of us, I suspect. I got the original iPhone, skipped the 3G for the 3GS, and then skipped all of the 4’s and currently have a 5c. Going from a 3GS to a 5c was a fun and funny trip, actually. I imagine I’ll get a 6S Plus – or whatever they call it – next.
