Fan of Metroidvania games? Like mice and pixelart? Then you might want to check out Micetopia, a new game starring a “brave mouse who must fight, jump, and explore its way through a world of mystery.”

Micetopia, created by Russian developer NinjaRabbitStudio, is available now to download on iOS and iPadOS in the App Store. Check out the trailer below.

Aleksey Lobachev, CEO of NinjaRabbitStudio, told Cult of Mac that he started working on the game at the end of 2018. “Development took about one year and three months,” he said. “I developed the game myself, [although] the sounds and graphics are outsourced. Because I have a regular job as a systems administrator, I [worked on] the game at night.”

The preview for the game reads as follows: “Welcome to the medieval, magical kingdom of Micetopia, where mice live … freely [in] an idyllic country village. Unfortunately as the story begins, forces of evil have taken away all the mice, except for the one elder remaining.”

Mice to make your acquaintance

What follows is a fairly typical Metroidvania game, in which the player must explore a large (or, since it’s mouse-scale, kinda small) world, battling enemies and picking up new skills.

“At the beginning of the game, the mouse learns to shoot a bow, but it does not work out,” Lobachev said. “Then [later] in the game, he is taught by his uncle who gives him a new bow. [The] archery is very fun and brings interesting mechanics in the game. [For example] you can shoot through fire and the arrow will light up, or it will stick into the wall and you can jump on it.”

Micetopia is available to download now, priced $3.99. If you’re a fan of the genre, and of supporting indie developers, it’s definitely worth taking a look.
