Apple’s new immersive concert video Metallica will give Vision Pro owners a unique experience of one of the band’s pulse-pounding shows. Filmed during the band’s M72 World Tour, it captures three Metallica songs in ultra-high-resolution, 180-degree video and Spatial Audio.
In a press release Tuesday, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich described the immersive video as a revolutionary twist on the standard concert film.
“Game-changing is putting it lightly,” Ulrich said. “Seeing our concert like that, along with the energy of the Mexico City fans — it’s very immersive, and it’s super-fun. We’ve always been interested in pushing the boundaries, and Metallica on Apple Vision Pro is exactly that.”
Metallica immersive concert video for Apple Vision Pro
Ever since Apple launched the Vision Pro in February 2024, the only thing worse than the $3,499 price tag has been the lack of immersive video for the headset. Using the headset is a truly magical experience, and watching 3D movies in Vision Pro might look fantastic. Still, owners of the high-end headsets expect more — especially since Apple pitches Vision Pro as the “ultimate entertainment device.”
Apple continues to dribble out exclusive content, mostly focused on music, sports and outdoor adventures. (A new feature-length documentary, Bono: Stories of Surrender, is coming to Apple TV+ in May.) But the new immersive video focusing on Metallica — one of the biggest metal bands of all time — might bring a whole new audience to Vision Pro.
Metallica features classic tracks “Whiplash,” “One” and “Enter Sandman.” And Apple and the band went whole hog to capture the raging performance from multiple angles.
The company “built a custom stage layout featuring 14 Apple Immersive Video cameras using a mix of stabilized cameras, cable-suspended cameras, and remote-controlled camera dolly systems that moved around the stage,” according to the press release.

Lars Ulrich and Zane Lowe discuss the project at SXSW

During an onstage interview Tuesday at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Ulrich discussed the immersive video with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe. While obviously not a disinterested observer, Lowe called watching Metallica on Vision Pro “profound.”
He described seeing Metallica singer/guitarist James Hetfield at the start of the video.
“The first thing you see is James, big man, big presence, and he’s walking in front of you, and he’s smoking the cigar, and the smoke is coming over him, and it’s going right into your face, and you’re walking right behind him,” Lowe said.
Metallica immersive video: A whole new way to experience a concert
He described the visceral experience of virtually walking onto the stage in the Mexican stadium in front of a massive crowd of more than 65,000 Metallica fans.
“I’m getting, like, goosebumps just thinking about the experience, because you immediately are no longer a bystander,” Lowe said of watching the Metallica immersive video. “You are having the same experience James is having, with the same level of enthusiasm and excitement and anticipation, and I’m sure, still nerves. And then you literally are like, ‘OK, when’s this ride gonna end?’ And it doesn’t — you follow him, and he’s high-fiving fans, and you’re still there all the way through the crowd, and it doesn’t quit for 26 minutes. I’ve never, ever experienced anything like it as a fan of a band or an artist.”

Apple will release the Metallica immersive video this Friday for Vision Pro owners. The company said people can book a Vision Pro demo at an Apple Store for an extended preview of the Metallica experience starting that day. (We highly recommend doing the Vision Pro demo if you haven’t done it yet.)
