Meet Marc Newson’s gorgeous Beretta boomstick

By

Marc Newson is tag-teaming design at Apple now with Jony Ive, but that’s not stopping him from working part-time on some incredible part-time projects. We saw Newson redesign the beer keg, now he’s taking aim at redesigning Berretta’s classic shotgun.

Berretta unveiled Newson’s redesign of its 486 shotgun at an event last night in London. The boomstick has been updated with a 21st century design, adding a new opening lever design to go with the intricate engravings.

Take a look:

Newson’s update lowers the tail of the traditional receiver, adding more wood for warmth and to separate the safety from the receiver. This unique design makes the 486 by Marc Newson extremely elegant and instantly recognizable. Newson said the main focus for his design “was to simplify and rationalise all the surfaces. Specifically streamlining the area of the action.”

The engravings on the shotgun are an homage to Asia, homeland of the pheasant. Newson used a high-tech laser in the manufacturing process to make the intricate. The process was designed to give deeper contrast and sharper resolution to the texture.

His career at Apple, and invitations to Bay Area parties, just expired.

  2. It’s a stupid killing machine! Why is it important?

  3. Hang_the_rich says:

Another gun, just what the world needs.

Haha, the comments on this article are going to be amazing. I for one think this is a piece of art. Bravo!

    Looks great.
And thanks for the myopic comments everyone else.

They’re just ignorant and either live in, or want to live in “very free” countries like Cuba, North Korea, or Iran, where it’s a crime to defend yourself. (Funny seeing you here, I follow you on IG)

      • Jonathan R Wegner says:

Great to see you here also.
Ultimately good design is design. I feel the previous comments are ignorant and come from people that do not even know where burger meat comes from.

Congrats Marc and thanks to Cult of Mac for posting this. Unlike all the ridiculous comments below from people who couldn’t even dream of buying such a beautiful piece of art, us Americans support the right to defend oneself. It’s in our Constitution and our history. If you don’t like it, move on, nothing to see here for you. If you really don’t like it, move to North Korea.

Figured some people wouldn’t be happy about Marc’s creation, but I think it’s a beautiful piece of art. The Beretta 486 is a classic bird hunting rifle, not a great killing machine when there are other options like the AK-47 and AR-15. This thing will probably never be fired. It’s a display piece.

Thanks for sharing — Marc is a very influential designer, so its very narrow-minded not to observe the full scope of his work, ultimately it’s all interrelated.
Pity that the 486 will likely become a safe queen, I’m sure Mr Newson would prefer it is used for its designed intent.

yeah, but it’s kind of like Mac Pro, Leica, and Gold Earpods he built with Jony. Those items are so valuable as collector items because of who made them, that using them would devalue it.
