The Mac Pro is one of the most beautiful and powerful computers ever created, but it remains beyond the reach of many small developers due to a price tag that’s bigger than a car down payment.
That could change this week when MacStadium brings the world’s first Mac Pro data center online, giving anyone the ability to rent server time on the high-performance Apple computers for just a few bucks a month.
MacStadium CEO Greg McGraw said the company originally set out to address the needs of small developers with Mac mini hosting. “We had great success with the Mac mini and we’ll continue to use it,” McGraw told Cult of Mac. “But the Mac Pro is an enterprise-class data center appliance. It’s going to open up a whole new market.”

With the rise of iOS, Fortune 500 companies need more Macs to test their apps. Apple killed its Xserve server line in 2011, but when Cupertino unveiled the Mac Pro in 2013, McGraw immediately saw the potential in an army of Mac Pros.
It’s a totally different approach than Facebook is taking with its new modular data center based on low-cost components. MacStadium‘s new data center located in Georgia will use Apple’s pricey, perfectly engineered machines to pack in more computing power per square inch than is possible with your typical server.
To make the Mac Pro a viable data center machine that can compete with traditional rack units or blade server setups, McGraw’s team created a custom server rack that houses 160 Mac Pros. Thanks to the Mac Pro’s unified thermal core, which uses a central piece of extruded aluminum to control heat generated by the computer’s processors, Apple’s small, circular machine is far more efficient than the old Xserve boxes. It’s 400 percent more power-efficient, and 160 percent more cooling-efficient.
Using these tiny powerhouses in a new type of data center is MacStadium’s effort to turn the Mac platform into a viable server option for the business world.
One of the data center’s biggest challenges will be convincing small business to switch to the Mac platform. Macs are highly regarded as consumer machines, but enterprise has looked at the Mac as more of a toy. However, combing the impressive Mac Pro hardware, with VMware’s virtualization software, companies have access to a huge new resources that can finally run their entire service on the Mac platform, rather than going to Amazon for a Linux server, or Windows Azure.
The Mac platform offers key advantages, Virtual Command CTO Chris Chapman told Cult of Mac.
“If they can get people on the platform it makes sense, especially in small businesses where they tend to throw a Windows server in the closet, forget about it and then get infected,” Chapman said. “You can now have a hosted Mac platform that can keep you out of that.” 
Aspiring iOS developers will be able to utilize the Mac Pro data center too. Not only is it cheaper to rent a CPU than drop $4,000 on a Mac Pro, but running software diagnostic tests can be performed 20 times faster on the Mac Pro.
“This gives them an opportunity to get some Mac platform stuff without going through the rigmarole of investment, figuring it out, and then finding out if they’re good at it,” said Chapman. “You can go rent a full-blown Mac operating system and test your stuff and try out all your coding tools on a month-to-month basis without sinking costs into hardware.”
MacStadium still faces a long uphill battle with its Mac-centric approach. The company will have to compete against giants like CloudStack and Amazon, which just unveiled its Lambda cloud service last week. Those companies’ Linux boxes are often unbelievably cheap, but Chapman says that for developers running applications, handling databases or doing anything with scale, the Mac Pro data center actually could be cheaper.
“For the complete package that Mac is, small businesses can get a lot out of it that they don’t know about — if they give it shot,” Chapman said.

I’d like to see Apple devices attempt to compete in the server business but I realize the profits won’t be high unless Apple can convince enterprise businesses that they can do things other servers can’t match. Could that rack really open up a new industry for Apple? That’s hard to believe because I’d think the costs would be higher than what most businesses would want to pay.
That’s a nice little server case for the Mac Pro. I wonder how much something like that would cost. If it could support a couple of drives and maybe one card slot that would be sweet.
At least in terms of the actual storage, no servers have faster storage than the PCIe SSDs in the Mac Pro. There’s also Thunderbolt 2, which is faster and more flexible than anything else in terms of external storage and other functions. Having 6 of those is a HUGE advantage for the Mac Pro! Max out the RAM and those things will pee on all other servers or workstations!

ANY server with PCIe slots can have a PCIe SSD, just like the systems in this article. Not only that, but they can have *more* of them.

Seems everyone missed the point, it’s running VMware, so you can run any flavour of operating system. This will smoke any enterprise server and as pointed out already, thunderbolt equipped for dual channel 10GB external connections. It would be interesting to see if VMware supports the GPU’s for Horizon View Desktops. The IOPS in this setup would be crazy once in high availability with some shared thunderbolt storage.
It’s become quite obvious to me that some of you have no idea what *enterprise* class servers can do. Not only can they have a far higher core-count than these MacPro’s, they can have *FAR* more RAM, PCIe SSD’s / SAS SSD’s, and MUCH faster fiber interconnects to storage/etc.
At best, this set-up is a gimmick, just like using those stupid Mac Minis as a “server”.
