At first glance a Baltimore crime story set in 1966, the limited series Lady in the Lake soon turns into a surreal nightmare, as shown in the trailer Apple TV+ dropped for it recently. As the streamer said in press materials, the show, starring Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram, turns into a “feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale about the price women pay for their dreams.”
So it’s a bizarre and arresting trailer. It includes “live performances” that are like fever dreams. The seven-part series debuts with its first two episodes on Friday, July 19.
Update: The new Apple TV+ drama series Lady in the Lake is now streaming, as of Friday. Reviews look a bit mixed — with some offering high praise for Portman in her TV debut — but you should see for yourself and watch the new show here.
Lady in the Lake series trailer depicts far more than a missing-person case
The Lady in the Lake series stars Academy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winner Portman, who also executive produces, and Emmy Award nominee Ingram, under the decidedly creative direction of show creator Alma Har’el. Interestingly, the show made news in summer 2022 when Baltimore locals threatened to shoot up the set if they weren’t paid off. The producers opted to switch locations instead.
Portman plays Maddie Schwartz, a Baltimore housewife who always wanted to be a writer. But when she becomes fascinated by the death of Cleo Johnson (Ingram) — who seems to be the lady literally found in a lake — things get wild in a hurry (at least in the trailer).
Here’s the show description from Apple TV+:
When the disappearance of a young girl grips the city of Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966, the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. Maddie Schwartz (Portman) is a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson (Ingram) is a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger. From visionary director Alma Har’el, Lady in the Lake emerges as a feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale about the price women pay for their dreams.

Along with Portman and Ingram, the show stars Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison and Pruitt Taylor Vince.
Notably, Marcus Norris, the founder and artistic director of the South Side Symphony, composed the soundtrack. And the live performances are composed and produced by the critically acclaimed Bekon, a Grammy-nominated producer known for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s albums DAMN. and Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
The show comes from the Fifth Season production company, with additional production from Crazyrose and Bad Wolf America. Har’el executive produces, writes and directs the show with Christopher Leggett. Portman executive produces alongside Sophie Mas and a host of others.
