Kevin Rose and his new company, called Milk, has launched an app called Oink in the App Store. We told you about Oink awhile back when Rose demoed the project in San Francisco at the Web 2.0 Summit. The app has now been made available to everyone.

Oink is an app that enters the user-reviewed, location-based scene of other apps like Yelp and Foursquare. Taking cues from Rose’s first success, Digg, Oink lets users rank things based on the context of a certain city or general location.

Oink is an easy way to rate and rank the things around you. Instead of just rating places, you rate the items inside. You could easily find the most popular items on a menu and see if a friend has tried anything there. Then if there’s something you like, it’s just a single press to rate it and share it with friends.

What you can do with Oink:
• Rate items around you and share with your followers
• See all the cool stuff your friends and other users are Oinking
• Find the best things in town (e.g. Best “Pizza” in Denver)
• Find the items at a place (e.g., Best roller coasters at Six Flags)
• Build “cred” in your areas of interest
• Share your Oink activity on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare

Oink is available on the iPhone for free in the App Store. The app seems to be using Google Maps to display a large array of places already.

This is a great concept. But I need another one of these apps like I need another hole in my head.

While Oink is in the building stages of their audience, Apps like Yelp have taken off with a huge base of users and basically do the same thing. Not in the same manner (which is the cool thing about this app) but the same overall principle.

I wish you much success… I just don’t see myself jumping on this bandwagon yet.

I downloaded it but haven’t had a chance to try it out. I’m also vegan……..so it’ll be hard to know what’s what for me lol

Kevin Rose Stole the Oink! app idea… there was another app rating food/items months before he “Came up with 2-3 new ideas aka Milk’s Mission statement”… Also… there is a Social Network app called “Oink!”  see oinkmobile.com  that was launched Oct 2010.  So again where is the original idea? What about the other app.. they are launching the iOS app this month… but their Android was out in March? and their web app (oct 2010)….  So does Kevin steal the lime light? What about the ideas of the other 2 app creators and their efforts?

I won’t download his app.. for those reasons but also because the reviews are horrible.. it collects email addresses.. crashes, he wants YOU to build up HIS app database? when did that become the norm?

For such a “talented” person.. you’d think he would have not stomped on others to get his app name recognition…

I think he should change the name… make it work first… and build his own database like google, Facebook, etc.

The folks from Taap.it Live Local want to help any Oinkers who want to save their Oinks.  Per Tom Nguyen, Community Manager withTaap.it: “With a simple, one step Oink-to-Taap Import Tool located at http://taap.it/import-oink , former Oinkers can convert their painstakingly accrued Oinks into Taaps, and continue rating specific things inside places.
