Never one to pull a punch, Steve Jobs recently told Time Magazine that Al Gore can win the 2008 presidential election if the pro-environmental Apple board member wants to:

“If he ran, there’s no question in my mind
that he would be elected,” said Jobs, referring to Gore. “But I think
there’s a question in his mind, perhaps because the pain of the last
election runs a lot deeper than he lets most of us see.”

I have to assume that last sentence is humor. No one has ever seen Al Gore express emotion about the election, ever. Any pain at all would be the first anyone has seen. What do you think — is the world ready for America’s first iPresident?

Gore would certainly make a better President than Hillary….

Well, it would work out well as an answer to all those people uncomfortable with things like ‘Echelon’, etc. — hey, since Al invented the internet, I’m sure he’s just a few documents away from being granted a patent on it, and perhaps a title of ownership.

And how can he be faulted for wanting to monitor everything that happens on his own network?

Now, that stinky Bush fellow owns NOTHING of the online world, and can’t possibly hope to make up a worthwhile excuse to stick his nose in our personal business, warrant or not…

Politics aside, what would this mean for Apple? Would he have to give up his seat on the board (like Ellison did) because he had too many commitments to dedicate the necessary time to contribute? Would federal contracts start to lean away from Microsoft hegemony? Would he be able to use the underground police (you know we have them here, too) to get rid of the environazis that are always harassing Apple with claims of non-bio-friendly AppleCores? Would Rush (an outspoken Mac advocate) finally vote for a Democrat?

Finally, I have to note that since I don’t think Steve Jobs is an idiot, I have to believe that he’s only half kidding about this. The truth is, Mr. Gore has some great ideas and performs at a level that is valuable for an organization like Apple — but has utterly failed as his own spokesperson. That’s something he has in common with our current President — but this is not a frailty that the American people are ready to deal with for another four years. We need another person who presents as well on camera (think Reagan, Clinton, the unDrunk Kennedys, etc.).

The next President will have to look good on YouTube. We haven’t met him/her yet.
