No, it’s not. But a quick glance at its box might fool you into thinking so, and that’s because Sony seems to have used Apple’s default OS X Lion wallpaper as the background image on the company’s EX621 BRAVIA TV.
How Apple’s ‘Andromeda Galaxy’ wallpaper ever made it onto this box is unclear, but we’re guessing someone at Sony — the guy in charge of boxes — messed up. Admittedly, Sony have tried to alter the image somewhat by zooming in slightly and changing the angle of said galaxy, but we’re not stupid enough to let that slide past us.
The box was spotted at Costco by an eagle-eyed 9to5 Mac reader.

i can’t really tell but a tell-tale sign is that Apple removed like entire planets from that particular galaxy, so if there aint no planets there, IT’S APPLES!
That image, maybe, but definitely not the original taken by NASA. This one does look a lot like Apple’s though.
Not planets, but entire galaxies. Specifically M110 which normally appears just below the Andromeda Galaxy. There are rumors that the reason why Apple removed it was because Samsung adopted the designation for their own SHW-M110S phone. I don’t know if I believe that, but there it is.
Since Apple changed the picture and tweaked the colors and such, I believe Apple could go after Sony on this. If Sony had used the original image or changed it to suit their purposes, then I don’t think Apple could do anything. M110 missing from the image indicates, to me at least, where Sony got their picture.
preposterous
thank you for correcting me! i was thinking entire galaxies but i was thinking i’d better slow my roll cuz i wasn’t sure.

My exact thoughts! Sometimes the wordings from Apple blogs makes it sound like Apple owns everything!
It should have been worded ‘The same image used by Apple’ – Unless of course, that image was patented for Apple use only?
lol nice… Normally I don’t share news about Sony since they’re a primary member of RIAA and MPAA and thus don’t deserve it, but I made an exception for this :D
Well, maybe the distant relatives of the Iranian astronomer Abd al0Rahman al-Suf would beg to differ since he discovered Andromeda (yes, I know astronomers don’t get a copyright on discoveries, but they should, lol). Removing some parts of the image doesn’t warrant a change copyright ownership. If that were the case lets just all remove the “bite” out of Apples logo, make it a whole apple, claim ownership, and start using it on products. I wonder how quickly Apple would sue us.
I don’t get it… are companies just lining up to get sued by apple???
do they wake up one morning and say “let’s copy something from apple.. since we don’t have any creative people just brainless idiots” ?
They do? Can you site ownership credentials please?
At first I thought this article was stupid, but on closer inspection the smaller galaxy below Andromeda cannot be seen on this picture, whereas it can be on NASA’s image. So, like you say, someone probably just messed up.

It’s a licenced image. I doubt Apple bought ALL the rights to it (history shows they’re cheap that way), so it can show up on TV, carpet, or dog food ads if they aren’t Apple competitors. Apple doesn’t sell TVs, so this isn’t likely to be contrary to their licence.
Apple doesn’t sell TVs YET…
Apple invented the Andromeda Galaxy????? O_o
Well technically the TV could be running (or displaying) Lion if it had HDMI inputs. With a thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor I display my new MBA on my TV several times a week.
He’s taking about that particular image.
Apple licensed the image. Sony licensed the image. Hundreds, probably thousands of others have licensed this image. Apple modified it. Sony modified it. Hundreds, probably thousands of others have modified it. Just because the modifications are similar, or even identical, does not mean Apple could “go after” Sony. Apple has a license to the image, not a copyright. As long as Sony has a proper license from the copyright holder, they’re in the clear.
This isn’t Apple’s image. It isn’t Sony’s image either. It’s not even NASA’s image. It belongs to this guy: http://www.robgendlerastropics…
