Like a lot of people, you have probably used the screen on your iPod as an impromptu flashlight.
Steven Spader is accused of using an iPod to guide him to victim Kimberly Cates, then hacking her to death with a machete.
One of the details to come out of the trial taking place in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire is how the 18-year-old Spader found his way through the one-story family house in the hours before dawn to reach his victims, Cates and her young daughter Jaime.
Spader and a group of teens allegedly planned to randomly break into a house and kill the occupants. So he and three other teens are said to have collected weapons (knives and the machete) then parked near the Cates’ home.
After breaking in, they cut power and used an iPod taken from Jaimie’s room to illuminate their path to the master bedroom, where mother and daughter were asleep.
Prosecutors say Spader used the machete and co-defendant Christopher Gribble used a knife to hack at both victims.
Jaime, now 12, was badly wounded but was left for dead and survived.
