Backbone updated the Lightning version of its popular game controller for iPhone with new magnetic adapters, a reshaped D-pad, and more. The goal of the second generation Backbone One is “better, faster, and longer gaming,” according to the company.

It now matches the updated USB-C version that Backbone introduced in autumn 2023.

Backbone One iPhone controller promises ‘better, faster, and longer’ gaming

With 49% of the global market in 2023, mobile gaming outweighs both console (29%) and PC (21%) gaming. It brought in $90 billion. And RPGs are one of the most popular categories on mobile, generating $20.2 billion last year.

But playing an RPG on an iPhone with virtual sticks and buttons displayed on the touchscreen can be a frustrating experience. That’s why many players turn to Backbone One. It adds physical controls to the handset, making advanced games more enjoyable.

Backbone One for iPhone — Lightning (2nd Gen) launched Tuesday with an updated design. The original version was already quite good, but the accessory-maker wasn’t satisfied.

“Improvements include new magnetic adapters to support many popular phone cases, an improved ergonomic design, enhanced phone stability, a reshaped D-Pad, and more,” says Backbone. The adapters are intended to provide a better fit and support for many phone cases.

Backbone’s iPhone game controller is usable with Apple Arcade, Xbox Game Pass, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna+ and more.

Price and availability

Backbone One for iPhone — Lightning (2nd Gen) is ready to order now. It’s available on black or a white Playstation Edition. The USB-C version that launched in autumn 2023 is also still available, of course.

Order from: Backbone

No matter the version, the gaming iPhone game controller is $99.99. Plus, Backbone+ members receive a 30% discount when upgrading to a 2nd-gen controller, no trade-in required

If ordering, be sure to purchase the second generation model. Or at least get a significant discount on the original version.
