Do not worry that you’ll accidentally bend your iPhone Air. Despite its super-slim shape, tests show that it takes a huge amount of pressure to get the sleek new model to break.

That should reassure those who might accidentally sit on the handset.

iPhone Air bend test results are ‘shocking’

The people most worried about bending their smartphone are likely the ones who carry it in a back pocket. That’s not recommended because accidentally sitting on the handset is inevitable. But it seems iPhone Air users don’t have much to worry about, despite it being “the thinnest iPhone ever made,” according to Apple.

When the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything did its usual torture tests on the handset, the results left tester Zack Nelson “shocked.”

He started by simply trying to bend the iPhone Air between his hands. His attempt to bend it from the back resulted in “freakin’ nothing.”

“Flipping it around and bending from the front, we actually get some curvature this time,” said Nelson. “But thanks to that titanium, it snaps back as straight as it was coming out of the box.”

The iPhone Air boasts a titanium frame which Apple promises makes it “more durable than any previous iPhone.” Third-party testing bears this out. Nelson ruled that the device 100% passes JerryRigEverything’s durability test.

Extreme testing

Not content to stop after his simple between-the-hands test, Nelson next resorted to extreme measures to find out how much force is necessary to bend the slim iPhone. He used a hoist and a crane scale, and he was finally able to get the handset to bend: 216 pounds.

But as he pointed out, that doesn’t mean the weight of a person sitting on the device can bend it. “Keep in mind that all 216 pounds was concentrated directly in the center of the phone,” said Nelson. “If you’re a 216-pound person sitting on your phone, that weight is going to be distributed across the whole surface. Unless you have buns of steel, I imagine your pants pockets would rip off before any damage happens to the new iPhone Air.”

“Just like it was forged in the heart of a dying star, or deep in the fires of Mount Doom, the iPhone Air has no business being this indestructible,” said Nelson.
