The next big iPadOS overhaul will make the OS more like macOS. That’s what a new report claims, indicating Apple will focus on “productivity, multitasking and app window management.”
All these changes will make iPadOS behave closer to macOS than iOS.
iPadOS 19 could deliver a macOS-like experience
Apple uses the same M-series chip on its iPads as its entry-level Macs. However, iPadOS and its iOS roots prevent Apple’s tablet from reaching its full potential. Over the years, Apple added several useful multitasking features to iPadOS to boost productivity, but there’s still room for improvement.
It seems Apple will address many of the limitations of its tablet OS with iPadOS 19 this year. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, in his weekly Power On newsletter, says, “this year’s upgrade will focus on productivity, multitasking and app window management — with an eye on the device operating more like a Mac.”
This will come as part of Apple giving iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 a big visual overhaul. They will adopt a glossy, visionOS-like look with rounded corners. The entire interface will also be more consistent across the platforms. An iOS 19 leak already gave us our first look at the visionOS-inspired glassy design.
There’s no word on what exact new features and functional improvements iPadOS 19 will bring to iPads. Still, it seems iPadOS 19 might finally turn iPads into a MacBook replacement that many of us have been longing for.
M5 iPad Pro could go well with iPadOS 19
The big iPadOS 19 overhaul will go well with M5 iPad Pros that should debut in Q3 or early Q4 this year. They entered late-stage testing inside Apple in March of this year, with mass production slated to begin in H2 2025.
Apple gave its pro iPad lineup a major upgrade last year, so the 2025 refresh will likely bring a minor spec bump and focus on the M5 chip.
