On your next flight, along with an extra pair of socks and a hefty dose of patience, you are likely to take your iPhone or iPad to the airport, leaving you laptop at home. More than eight out of ten mobile devices used in airports carry the Apple logo, according to a study released Wednesday.

Devices powered by Apple’s iOS account for 83 percent of mobile devices using airport Wi-Fi, according to Boingo Wireless. Android devices land in fourth place, behind the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. More than half — 58 percent — of the Wi-Fi devices found at airports during June were smartphones or tablets.

“Since the launch of the iPhone in June 2007, we’ve seen a marked growth trend for non-laptop devices, but the exponential growth in iPhones and iPads in the last year pushed mobile devices past laptops, showcasing just how disruptive the trend is,” Dawn Callahan, vice president of consumer marketing, said.

The Wi-Fi Snapshot surveyed more than 60 airports in North America and Europe, along with Boingo customers using non-laptop devices at more than 400,000 wireless hotspots.

Too bad there isn’t an app to let me get through TSA security checkpoints faster.

This proves that most Android devices are shitty as far as web browsing experience is concerned.

Just avoid going to the USA and you simultaneously avoid 99% of all security problems and hassles.

I do a lot of traveling. The best thing I’ve ever done was to get an iPad. No more bulky laptop case…no more removing of the laptop to go through X-ray…no more deciding which of the 25 books I’m currently reading to bring…I bring them all! LOVE my iPad! I own the first gen and will likely upgrade to the iPad 3 when it’s released. It’s invaluable to me. Thank you!

Still can’t believe it I just got a $827.89 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use http://jmb.tw/52bf

I’m not surprised at all – I was on a plane this boring, and every 2nd person who I walked by in the aisle either had an iPad or and iPhone!

Or maybe those who can’t afford an iDevice also can’t afford an airline ticket?

This looks like another case of iOS useage being over-estimated, due to the behaviour of its email client. When you are at an airport and check your email using iOS, images are enabled by default and get loaded. This is unlike e.g. GMail on Android, or Outlook on your laptop. This creates a lot of additional connections and data volume on the boingo Wifi, but there is no extra real use. See:
