Nearly half of iPhone and iPad users have already upgraded to iOS 8 in the first week, but if you’re looking for stability, you might want to stay for a few weeks more.
Crash analytics data from Crittercism found that iOS 8’s crash rate is 78 percent higher than that seen on iOS 7, with an average crash rate of 3.56% across all devices.
The fact that iOS 8 isn’t as stable as iOS 7 yet isn’t surprising, given how much longer iOS 7 has been in development. Looking deeper into the numbers, it was discovered that older devices are more susceptible to crashing, with the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, and 5s averaging a 3.57% crash rate.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the most optimized for iOS 8 and have significantly lower crash rates of 2.63% (iPhone 6) and 2.11% (6 Plus). The crash rate for iOS 7 is 2.0%.
System crashes are a combo of both bugs in iOS 8 and buggy apps that haven’t been optimized for the new mobile operating system. As iOS 8 matures and developers clean up their code, we should see those crash numbers improve. Apple already has an update for iOS 8 that’s rumored to release soon.

It’s a Hanayamata day. Even if my phone crashes, it’s okay.
My iPad Air is so unusable because of this, I’ve resorted to using my iOS 7/iPad Mini.
Unacceptable.
This right here is the definition of first world problems
Shut up. That meme is retarded. How about I steal your car and leave you a note saying “First world problems…. haha :)” Or just empty your bank account. Then you can happily worry about 3rd world problems like how you’ll pay for your next meal or next months rent.
You are nowhere near as chill as one would expect with the username cannabisTV.
I’ll take that as a compliment, thanks :) Unlike ignorant people believe, stereotypes of cannabis users aren’t realistic. If you live in pain daily and also have to deal with the prejudice, ignorance and problems with medical insurance when it comes to using cannabis, you might understand where the passion, intensity, and perseverance comes from in regards to ACTIVISTS like me who do more than talk, we take massive action to become the change we want to see in the world instead of wishing it would happen for 80 years. I’ve spent over $5000 and THOUSANDS of hours in the last 6 years towards cannabis law reform and the broader scope of inalienable rights and personal liberty and freedom that encapsulates those things like the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I do my patriotic duty by exercising my rights and fighting for the personal freedom and liberty that our country was founded upon. Apparently the last 2 or 3 generations were too stupid, lazy and brainwashed to fight for those things themselves and it’s partially contributed to the fast erosion of those rights we’re seeing today as our corrupt government continues to take away more and more rights by the day. Being chill is good sometimes, but MASSIVE ACTION is what brings about real change, and that’s what I want to see here in America.
And I just hate hearing that meme, it’s so ignorant to say, like implying that anything aside from food, shelter and water is unimportant and implying that the person you’re directing the comment toward is somehow greedy or should feel ashamed for not being happy about something, like having a brand new phone get bricked in this case. Make sense?
You should downgrade if they’re still signing iOS7. They were as of Monday.
I use Crittercism in the apps I have in the app store and it tracks how often MY apps crash, not how often the OS is responsible for the crash.
There have been many API changes in iOS 8 and things that used to work in my apps suddenly don’t anymore. The crashes it is seeing could be because of lazy developers, not iOS 8.
I don’t know if Crittercism tracks other crashes, but if not, then your article is implying something that is not true.
Well this backs me up on my point when I say Apple is not as reliable as I hoped. But I will get an IPod touch
I put it on my 5s and ipad and not one problem.
I’m a Software Engineer, this is one of the Dumbest articles i’ve read ever… you might as well posted this 1 week after iOS6 or iOS7 came out and said the exact same thing… new OS = bugs from lazy as heck developers who haven’t updated their apps… this is as much apples fault as they are responsible for ebola
Apple. It just works!
Us beta testers were lazy this year.
iPhone 4 can’t run iOS 8.
WAIT until developers update their apps and fix the bugs in them.
why is iPhone 4 is in included on your crash list, iPhone 4 is not entitled for iOS 8 update though, funny…
