iOS 9 was set to have a new feature that would let developers create smaller apps targeted to specific iPhone devices. Called App Slicing, it would allow developers to target specific devices with smaller versions of their apps, rather than just sending out bloated Universal apps that need all the assets for all device types, including iPads.

App Slicing has been delayed until an unspecified time in a “future software update,” according to Apple’s developer website.

The delay is due to an iCloud bug in which app backups created in iOS 9 that have been “sliced” will only restore to the same model of iOS device it was created for, making it impossible to download the app to another device like you can now.

For now, Apple says, we’ll all be downloading Universal versions of the app (when applicable) so that you’ll be able to download them to your iPhone and iPad without any worry that you’ll be kept from an app because it’s been sliced to only fit on your iPhone.

Developers who have already figured out app slicing for their apps don’t need to do anything at this time; Apple promises to include the new feature sometime in the future.

Apple needs to get their sht together, it’s not like they didn’t know this was coming or something that was seriously needed for quite some time. Disable the iCloud backup related crap until you can get the two flunkies in the basement to work on it. Users can backup locally to their computers in the meantime.
