In a move similar to when IBM sold off its PC and laptop business sold it to Lenovo, HP is reportedly on the verge of spinning off its PC business in order to focus on cloud-based software and enterprise services.
That means the world’s largest computer maker may be about to exit the game entirely, and small wonder: Apple’s been beating them to a bloody pulp. Making Windows PCs is a low margin game, and Apple’s pretty much the only company in town that isn’t experiencing negative growth.
Seemingly to shore up its platform of service, HP is looking to buy European infrastructure software company Autonomy for as much as $10 billion.
HP has confirmed they are in talks to buy out Autonomu, and also say they are exploring “strategic alternatives” for its PC business, including a “full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a spin-off or other transaction.”
Boy, were Touchpad sales really that bad? Oh, right: yes they were.

The old IBM Thinkpads were great computers. Then they sold it to Lenovo. I had two, both of which didn’t last a year. Thank you Apple for making great computers!!!
Good Riddance!!! The only thing good about HP is that their crappy, 8-month old dead Pavilion laptops made me so irate that I told work I’d never buy another one. Switched to Mac and have Never.Been.Happier.
Getting out of the PC business is actually pretty astute. The “commodity” Win-PC business is dead. On the other hand, HP has a unique opportunity to leverage WebOS into a vertically integrated product offering. With HP’s presence in the business world, PCs, tablets, and phones running a mature, fully enabled WebOS could have been the “business” version of Apple. Add their servers and business services to the mix and NOBODY can touch them for top to bottom tools.
Too bad they rushed their tablet out too soon, because that may kill WebOS before it ever gets off the ground.
The tablets and phones and WebOS are not necessarily part of the PC business that they are exiting. At least we can hope so.
Wonder how long before Google try to buy WebOs from them
The touchpad wasn’t a bad product on paper, but it was rushed and had zero traction, especially in the developers space.
I just p a i d $21.87 for an i P a d 2-64GB and my boyfriend loves his Panasonîc Lumîx GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS.I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. What I want to know is what is that game in the picture???
Google’s not into the habit of buying to kill, and they already have a mobile OS. Not likely.
They’re killing the WebOS devices too folks.
Sorry Prof, they’re gone too.

Your point being? They didn’t kill Android. It’s somewhat important to their business at this point…
