If you enjoyed Dylan Bennett’s great video on how and why noise affects your digital photos — which we brought you a couple weeks ago — then you’re going to love this one about depth-of-field. Depth-of-field often proves confusing, but simply put, it is the amount of your scene that is in focus.

A large depth-of-field means that everything is sharp, from front to back. A shallow depth-of-field means that just a thin slice is in focus, with everything in front and behind blurred. This last is very popular today, possibly because we went for so long with small-sensor digicams and phones that just couldn’t manage it.

Dylan explains how it works, and how to control it, using his trademark words-and-diagrams style. This is a long one, at over 16 minutes, so you might want to grab a coffee first. It’s worth it, though, as Dylan’s straightforward explanations clarify things even for those who already know how it all works.
