“Drown out annoying roommates and co-workers today!” says the developer of Noise, a handy little ap for generating pink noise.

“Also known as a signal with even power distribution on a logarithmic frequency scale, pink noise masks background noise to help you concentrate.”

I guess it drowns out other noise, but I don’t really find this a rel soothing sound either.

I like the thing a lot, especially when I feel like working in a cafe. I use that and iTunes to listen to music at the same time, so I can’t hear the conversation of others. The noise isn’t really soothing per se, but you don’t notice it at all after a bit.

I just wish there was a pink-noise generator for my iPod.

I bought and downloaded a 15-minute pink noise track here for my iPod:

I pulled it into the same playlist several times, and for $4.99, I have a pink noise playlist that’s a couple of hours long. I probably could have figured out how to record from the Noise software and pull that into my iPod, but for $5, I was happy not to worry about it.
