The new Govee TV Backlight 3 camera-based TV ambient lighting system sets a category record for imaging resolution, the company said Monday. And, crucially for Apple users, it works natively with Apple Home via Matter right out of the box.

For Apple users who have held off on TV backlighting due to the limited smart home compatibility of earlier options, Govee TV Backlight 3 makes a more compelling case. It offers an upgraded optical system, native Apple Home support and a camera small enough that you’ll forget it’s there.
The key feature of the TV Backlight 3 is its optical system. Govee describes it as the first TV backlight to use a hybrid glass-plastic (1G+3P) dual-camera lens. It combines a glass element for high light transmittance with aspherical plastic elements for precise refraction.
The result is what Govee calls 4-million-pixel resolving power — the highest claimed in the TV backlight category. That represents a 100% improvement over the previous generation and roughly 30% better overall image clarity than conventional 2MP lenses.
In practice, that extra resolving power means the camera captures sharper edges and finer color gradients on screen, so the ambient light it generates behind your TV more faithfully tracks what’s actually playing. An expanded red-spectrum infrared filter also improves warm-tone sensitivity. That helps the system render sunset and firelight scenes more accurately. Govee designed the camera module to be discreet, describing it as smaller than a thumb drive. And it installs without any tools.
24-zone color mapping and smarter AI scene detection

Rather than casting a single wash of color behind the display, the TV Backlight 3 divides the screen into up to 24 independent zones. Each one analyzes and mirrors its corresponding portion of the image. Govee pairs this with AI content filtering that adjusts the lighting character to suit what’s on screen — subdued and moody for thrillers, vivid and energetic for animation, warm and soft for documentary footage.
The underlying light strip has also been upgraded. High-density 4-in-1 RGBWIC LEDs running at 60 LEDs per meter add a dedicated white channel that goes beyond standard RGB setups for more nuanced color reproduction. Govee says brightness is up around 20% over the previous generation. And it includes smoother gradations from shadow to highlight and no visible breaks in the strip. Professional color algorithms, including gamma calibration and white-light blending, keep colors accurate across different brightness levels.
Apple Home and Matter support
For Apple users, the most important detail may be the simplest one. TV Backlight 3 supports Matter, meaning it connects to Apple Home without any workarounds or third-party bridges. It also works with Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. So that covers households with a mix of platforms.
Through the Govee Home app, users can access hundreds of preset scenes, sync the backlighting with up to 10 other Govee devices using DreamView, or enable Music Mode to have the lights react to audio in real time.
