How to stream torrented movies on iOS 8 without jailbreaking

By

movieboxapp

Popcorn Time is finally out for iOS, giving iPad and iPhone users direct access to “The Netflix of Pirated Movies” service for the first time ever. There’s just one catch: it requires a jailbreak.

Over 50% of iPhone and iPad users have already upgraded to iOS 8 and a jailbreak isn’t coming out anyday soon, but if you want to stream movies to your iOS device you’re still in luck.  A competing service called MovieBox does pretty much the exact same thing as Popcorn Time, and you can get it on your iPhone 6 and 6 Plus 8 without needing to jailbreaking.

Here’s how to install it:

movieboxinstall

First: Go to Settings >> General >> Date & Time. Deselect Automatic and change the date to September 16th
Second: Open Safari and visit this page https://www.pgyer.com/moviebox
Third: Tap the green button to install Movie Box
Fourth: Open MovieBox after it has installed and tap Trust on the developer notice
Fifth: Return to Settings >> General >> Date & Time and switch back to Automatic

Enjoy streaming movie torrents straight to the bigger than big screen on your iPhone 6 Plus.

Note: The current version of MovieBox isn’t supported on the iOS 8.1 beta and won’t install.

The only problem with these sites is that their response time is slow and updates to content is very infrequent.

    • dpacemaker says:

MovieBox updates the TV Shows roughly 3-4am EST. Movies get added when a decent version of it is available, unlike PopcornTime, they add anything, even crappy cam rips. MovieBox is a much better service.

why do we have to change the date?! i’m a newbie so i don’t know :(

    • stickyicky97 says:

because the site is legal in China, but not here. I assume the browser goes of time zone code to know if you’re actually in China, so by disabling it, there’s no way to verify your location? You’d think location services would be used by safari for verification, but oh well.

      • lowtolerance says:

That’s got absolutely nothing to do with it. The app is signed with an expired enterprise certificate. Changing the date fools iOS into validating the certificate.

      • stickyicky97 says:

makes sense. I didn’t realize you had to change the actual date to Sept. 16, so I was confused. Thanks for clearing that up.

is to trick Apple servers into approving the install

how safe is this “chinese” version?

  5. MrJohnsonUK says:

i attempted to install it on my ‘the new ipad’ with 8.0 on it and it just crashes when i attempt to load. I’ve already tried powercycling the device.

  6. stickyicky97 says:

I have 8.0.2 installed and it won’t download either.

  7. @drebies says:

make sure you open movie box before going back and having date and time set up to automatic. once you open the movie box it will load up then you can go change time.

  8. Confirmed working on an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0. I installed the app, opened it, changed the time back to automatic, and then restarted the app. Running great!

Is this something you’ll want to use a VPN with? For obvious reasons.

Glad I’m not the only one disgusted that this site is actively promoting illegal activity. I’m shocked that this is a news story. Do you realize that pirating movies and TV shows hurts the very people who work to make them? Why doesn’t Cult of Mac do a story about how to steal someone’s phone and sell it on the black market? I’m sure tons of people would love it and then bitch about how the technique didn’t work for them and how entitled they are to steal other people’s stuff.

    • thedirector says:

You can’t compare those 2 things at all. Stealing someones $300 device does not equate to simply not paying for a movie. And no, pirating these movies does not hurt the people who make them. Say a movie like the Box Trolls comes out. Im not going to pay $15 to go see it, simply because I don’t want to see it that badly. So I torrent it. Turn out I end up loving the movie. What do I do? Tell people about it. They were never gonna get my money in the first place. But now, there are a few people who may buy tickets, who weren’t planning on it if I hadn’t suggested it.

Besides, a good torrent may get 3000 downloads. That is nothing compared to the millions of people who will buy ticket to a movie, then buy the blu ray when it comes out.

      • Daibidh says:

Um, dude. I’m not here to judge but your rationalization is a bit weak. If you didn’t have the option to pirate, you’d pay to see more movies than you currently do. Maybe not all the movies you currently see but more. That “more” times the number of pirates adds up quickly for an industry as a whole. You seriously can’t say with a straight face that if you were forced to give up all your pirated content that you wouldn’t make at least a few additional purchases to fill the void.

None of us are perfect. We all have things we need to be doing better to make this world better. I sometimes struggle with honesty myself so really, I’m not prepared to say I’m better than you because I’m not. But the sooner we call a spade a spade the better. Theft is bad and even if you refuse to recognize it as theft you can’t say it’s not at at least lying.

All this said, I don’t really see that it matters if a site like Cult of Mac publishes this info. If all “reputable” sites stopped publishing this stuff, it would still be readily available elsewhere. I find it interesting to be kept abreast of this sort of thing. Gives me a better idea of what’s possible. And not all hacking is necessarily criminal in nature.

  14. Jeremy Blake says:

Some people want it. Don’t like it? Too bad.

  15. Daibidh says:

While I worked through my pirate/jailbreak fascination a while back, it’s interesting to read about these types of work-arounds using expired certificates. You’d think it would be pretty easy for Apple to prevent this sort of thing if they really wanted, right?

  16. Andy says:

So far I love this app!! Way better than popcorn time! How is AirPlay working for people??

  17. jamjamjam says:

I’ve tried to download, won’t let me watch anything at all, and suggests I download a VPN? is this happening for everyone?

  18. JailBreak101 says:

This really works – No more jailbreak needed!

  19. Fra025 says:

If I follow the guide to install movie box. Do I have to turn date back to 16th,load a show then change date back each time I watch something new??. If I don’t I keep getting video unavailable…

  20. Yujin says:

Does this install any key loggers, malware or any stuff we might regret later?

  21. mrjoncampbell says:

I am in the UK and when I click on a movie to watch it says unavailable and has a “Why?” Tab which directs me to a VPN site. Is there anyway for fixing this?

  22. robert says:

is there any way to do this with musicbox aswell

  23. Aware says:

I’d be very careful here, I’ve noticed that once you download the app you need to keep it running in the background, because once you close it and you attempt to open it again it seems to keep crashing. http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-keylogger-flaw-on-iphone-2014-2

That story is how A keylogger was operating without A iPhone needing to be Jailbroken, this MovieBox app seems fishy as it needs to stay running in the background, because once its closed it crashes until its reinstalled and running in the background again. Be CAUTIOUS; close all other apps before proceeding with MovieBox.
