LAS VEGAS — It’s hard to say what’s most amazing about Elio Motors’ three-wheeled car: its sexy frame, its extreme fuel efficiency or its jaw-dropping $6,800 price tag.

Cult_of_Mac_CES_2015 That princely sum — a little less than a 12-core Mac Pro costs — gets you a sleek two-seater that looks like something you’d see in a sci-fi flick. It’s got two wheels up front, one in back and a built-in holder for your iPad.

And on the International CES show floor here, Elio’s got a team of breezy boosters who tout its many forward-looking features with the quick-witted humor of the best car salesmen.

“For $6,800, we ought to charge you for the air in the tires,” Elio Motors rep Don Harris told Cult of Mac when we asked if the iPad was included in the purchase price.

The idea for the car emerged in 2008, when gas prices were going through the roof. High-performance electric cars like the Tesla and conservative gas-electric hybrids like the Prius got a lot of press as gas prices spiked in the intervening years, but the Elio has more in common with the cult classic Insight hybrid that Honda killed in 2006.

The Elio is a futuristic-looking, no-frills ride designed for hypermilers attracted to fuel-efficiency and nontraditional design.

The Elio is powered by a three-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 60 horsepower. It will go zero to 60 in 9.5 seconds and hit a top speed north of 100 mph. The estimated mileage is 84 mpg highway and 49 mpg city. It comes standard with power door locks, heat, air conditioning and a five-speed transmission, but you can get an automatic for less than $1,000 more.

Safety features include three airbags, a reinforced steel roll cage and anti-lock brakes. Because it’s got only three wheels, it’s classified as a motorcycle by the federal government. In some states, drivers would be required to wear helmets.

The car is also designed to have a data connection that will let owners make VOIP calls or remotely start the vehicle, unlock its doors or use cameras to scan the street where it’s parked. A built-in accelerometer can send alerts if the vehicle gets bumped, and all that could happen from an iPhone, a Web browser, an Apple Watch or other connected devices.

“This is a true Internet car,” said Elio rep Jerome Vassallo, although the company is still working to cut deals with mobile carriers to make that happen. Elio is hoping for a $19.99-a-month plan.

The eye-catching model at CES was a vivid Creamsicle orange, and the Elio will come in six other colors (True Blue, Marshmallow, Red Hot, Rocket Silver, Licorice and Sour Apple). The aerodynamic frame is covered in sheet-molded composite similar to what’s used in the new Corvette.

“It is a head-turner,” said Vassallo, and nobody could argue with that.

Sitting inside the Elio, I was surprised how spacious it seemed. The driver sits in front of the passenger, who might need to be an acrobat to get into the rear seat, and the vehicle sits very low to the ground. The tiny trunk opens up to hold cargo the size of a standard carry-on suitcase, and the rear seat folds forward to provide even more storage space for a solo driver.

The interior of the hand-built prototype looks pretty traditional, although the iPad makes a pretty sweet supplemental dashboard. We didn’t get to test-drive it through the throng of journalists at CES, but an Elio rep assured us it “drives very automotive-like.”

This isn’t Elio’s first time at the CES rodeo: They showed off the vehicle last year as well, and the Elio Motors website still says the American-made car will be available this year even though the current plan is to begin production in early 2016. Elio has taken 38,000 “reservations” of between $100 and $1,000 so far.

Right now, it’s basically a concept car, and there’s no guarantee the Elio will ever hit the road. After delays, Elio now plans to start production in early 2016, with a capacity to crank out 250,000 of the gas-sippers per year. They plan to build the cars in an old GM factory in Shreveport, Louisiana, where Hummers used to roll off the assembly line.

“Little irony for ya,” Vassallo quipped.

I hope this comes to fruition! Seems pretty awesome to me! Although for a car that touts its technology, I would like to see Bluetooth integration too.

    • FarewellVHS says:

That comes standard. I’m pretty sure. Or at least the add-on most will get does have bluetooth and every other kind of upgrade anyone would want.

  2. LillyMayPatterson says:

Lewis, Who told you that the production isn’t to start till 2016? You rolled it off as fact with nothing to back it. Otherwise, GREAT article. Thanks

I’ve already put my money in the hat, but I’m a little frustrated. First it was “early 2015” then “mid-to-late 2015” now it’s sometime (maybe) in 2016 for deliveries… I know my little deposit was just a hundred bucks to put my name on a list, but it’s discouraging to hear of the continual delays…

Wayne….It may never be produced. Still a lot to do. Elio applied to the Dept of Energy for a loan in 2008. It still has not been approved. They may never get the funding.

      • Adrayven says:

        Not exactly correct.

They applied in 2008 and were turned down. Didn’t make it past the main evaluation round. The Government didn’t consider the “green” enough back then and the government ate the bill on 2 other failed startups. So the government focused loaning to existing auto manufacturers.

They applied again this year and made it through the primary evaluation round. Now they need too make it through the next two audit rounds. Show they are truly viable as a business.

      • Kathy Vincent says:

I wonder what the process is for the next 2 audit rounds and how long those take.

    • Jorge says:

They have about 25% of the funding they need to start production I believe. They still need about another $150,000,000 to go before they can even start.

      • FarewellVHS says:

How is that possible? Is Paul Elio just the biggest lier on the planet? In an interview as well as their huge marketing push, they heavily state Fall 2015….

      • Kathy Vincent says:

I think he is trying to get this started but has to lie to the public to continue to collect deposits. If he were truthful in saying they don’t have the funding and production can not start until he does have the funds he would not have near the deposits….if any. The marketing is deceptive. It’s marketed like its already built and on the road. When you put you money down then they reveal in the fine print that they do not guarantee the retail price to be $6800, they don’t guarantee 84 mpg and they don’t guarantee that they will ever produce this car nor have to sell you one. Refundable deposits? If it fails I’m sure bankruptcy will prevent deposit refunds. What’s the advantage in $1000 deposit with a $500 discount if you don’t know the retail price. Elio can just increase the price $500 or more. Production is always less that a year out and cars will be delivered as early as 2 weeks after the start of production. I bought into this….twice in 2013. Elio Motors either knows they can not meet these production timelines and are liars or they are really bad business people. Either way…..if they start out lying and deceiving how can they be trusted if they ever build these cars.

      I feel the same.

Good idea, but the company isn’t viable. At least, not according to their finacial plans and quirky finances. They’ve been around for a while, but there are better altrernative out there. I hope they make it, but failure won’t be about the product. It will be cause of their odd financial foundations.

  5. Cris Cassity says:

Coolest ride since the original bug. Nothing expensive can go wrong with it.

  6. Chris Flowers says:

“Elio now plans to start production in early 2016” … Called it. It while likely not even be that soon if ever.

    • Kathy Vincent says:

They still don’t have the funding. They may never have the funding. They need to keep collecting deposits to continue the dream and salaries.

Caddo Parish give them a time limit as to when they need to start hiring. Here is an excerpt from the MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CADDO PARISH COMMISSION’S PARISH & URBAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
HELD ON THE 2nd OF AUGUST, 2013

    Economic Development Committee
    Page 2
Answering a question from Ms. Baker relative to the amount of jobs Mr. Elio would create, Mr. Rasher said that there would be a minimum of 1,500 new jobs created in that building. If the 1,500 jobs were not established by month 36, Mr. Elio would have to pay a financial penalty of $5,000 per job.

That 36 month period to create those jobs comes to a close around the end of this year/beginning of next year. If they don’t start creating jobs, Caddo may decide to yank the lease, and Elio will again be without a manufacturing facility.

btw…. this is the second time that Elio has applied for the DoE Loan. First time was in 2009. They were ultimately turned down. That can be found in the minutes of Pontiac Michigan City Council meetings. More can be found by looking up
