“It” girl actress Sydney Sweeney plays a drug addict and probable killer whose mom, played by Julianne Moore, will do anything to save her, according to a trailer Apple TV+ dropped recently for the new Echo Valley movie. It’s now streaming, as of Friday, and you can watch the trailer below.
Ridley Scott produces the thriller, which also stars Kyle MacLachlan and Domhall Gleeson.
Update: Echo Valley, now available to watch on Apple TV+, garners mixed reviews so far. Empire calls it a “superbly acted rural thriller.” Financial Times said it’s “delightedly twisty” with “dark dashes of Hitchcock.” But IGN calls it “hollow” and “dull,” and a New York Times review says: “A stellar cast led by Julianne Moore is unable to breathe life into this unsuccessful blend of maternal drama and crime caper.”
Echo Valley movie: Thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore debuts June 13 on Apple TV+
“What did you do?” is a nervous question that both mother Kate Garrett (Moore) and her troubled daughter Claire (Sweeney) ask each other at different points in the trailer for Echo Valley, appearing to dread the answer. The movie looks action packed and super-tense.
After all, it’s one of the first things you ask when your daughter shows up at your ranch late at night weeping and covered in someone else’s blood. And then later, with bodies sunk in lakes, extortion attempts in play and cops on the prowl, it may not be much relief when your mom answers the same question this way: “I took care of it. I took care of all of it.”
Along the way, we meet Jackie (Gleeson), who seems to know what Claire did and wants massive payment to keep it quiet. And then there’s Claire’s dad, Richard (MacLachlan), a cop who seems to dismiss Claire as an addict who just manipulates them for money.
An unusually revealing trailer
So it’s an unusually revealing trailer, yet of course it doesn’t give it all away. One wonders if Kate really took care of “all of it.” And if so, are both the mom and the daughter killers?
Here’s how Apple TV+ describes the thriller:
“In the edge-of-your-seat thriller Echo Valley, Kate (Academy Award winner Julianne Moore) is a mother struggling to make peace with her troubled daughter Claire (multi-Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney) — a situation that becomes even more perilous when Claire shows up on Kate’s doorstep, hysterical and covered in someone else’s blood. As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child in this gripping tale of love, sacrifice and survival from BAFTA Award-winning director Michael Pearce and Emmy Award-nominated writer Brad Ingelsby [Mare of Easttown].”
Ridley Scott’ s Scott Free Productions produces the Apple Original Film. Fiona Shaw, Edmund Donoovan and Albert Jones also star.
