Decoding Apple’s blurry iPhone 7 invite

What do you see in Apple's invite?

Apple is finally set to unveil something new on September 7. While the company hasn’t said what it will be, it’s pretty much certain a new iPhone or two will make an appearance at the invite-only San Francisco event.

The Apple rumor mill has been churning out juicy details about the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus for months and, if you stare at the blurry lights on Apple’s invite, you just might pick up a few more clues about what to expect during next month’s keynote.

Apple fanboys and fangirls have been busy doing god’s work decoding the invite. The theories range from the sober and the silly (does the dark background hint at dark mode?) to the absolutely absurd (“See” means iPhone will get retina scanning).

We’ve rounded up some of the best interpretations of the iPhone 7 invite.

See you on the 7th. Probably refers to a drop test from the 7th floor, which means it will be shutterproof.

  2. OverlordBR says:

    I see… HALF LIFE 3 confirmed!

  3. Francito says:

the dark cirle, means a refress of the home button

  4. josephz2va says:

I see people have time on their hands and making up belief the patterns of lights mean something.

  5. Edoardo says:

Definitely not so many clues in that photo. By experiencing with Apple invites, I only see three clues. First one, the blur effect on the dots is suggesting an improve camera, so double rear camera for the ‘Plus’ series and improved camera on the 4.7″ size. In my opinion, the dark background represents the dark mode feature that will be a sort of “killer feature” (software) of the new iPhones and the upcoming new Space Black version. Last but not least the sentence. If Apple underlined the ‘7’ is probably because the name will be iPhone 7. It’s strange because it doesn’t make sense, but it could be true.

  6. Shanos says:

This is probably an example of what the dual camera may be capable of, the bokeh balls are normally down to depth of field.

  7. David says:

This is obviously a picture taken by both camera lenses covered in water #waterproofing

  8. Tyler Hojberg says:

Improved colour accuracy in low light conditions?

  9. Luís Geraldes says:

I was the only one that saw 2 balls with a motion blur effect? That one on the left, going down and that one on the right going to the right, both green.

    • ENTP says:

I noticed that, too. My guess is long exposure support. I think it’s all about the camera, basically. So, dual lens, long exposure, low light, bokeh, improved color, etc.

  10. benaerograffiti says:

The image is the apple logo, the top part of it. It’s out of focus too, depth of field and all. And maybe the new OS will have an Apple Watch mode so the icons are circles? I dunno. Maybe the home button is floating off into space? I’m spitballing big colorful orbs lol

  11. Jon McGowan says:

I see they are having a few issues with the autofocus on the new camera

  12. AdamBoltGC says:

Tim Cooks blurry photos taken at a Super Bowl game will now have a nice bokeh effect? :-)

  13. George Hanna says:

lol guys it’s just the top of the Apple logo. it’s made out of dots probably suggesting dual lens camera on whatever they will unveil on September ‘Seven’

  14. CG says:

What about the blue dot that’s moving?

  15. PorridgeBear says:

I’m surprised nobody has seen that Apple Watch 2 is changing to circular faces with many background colours!

  16. Turbojacket says:

Symbolism. Apple logo and bokeh. The new iPhone will focus heavily on camera function.

  17. JayV81 says:

Dark mode or a stealth black iPhone finally.

  18. Andrew Smith says:

This maybe be too simplistic, but my first look at the invite appears to be similar to the glow of street lights, just out of focus. Speaking to the dual-lens camera with improved low light photography.

  19. lorenplanes says:

It’s obviously a bridge taken way out of focus with like an f/1.4 or 1.2 lens.. see the double triangles, looks somewhat familiar to a bridge and the dot in the sky could be a plane. All the other dots? I dunno. Boats? Cars? Water?

  20. lorenplanes says:

It’s obviously the top part of the Apple logo.. Duh.

  21. Null Static Void says:

It’s prety straightforward for those of us that own DSLRs. It’s a picture featuring bokeh, or as Kai Wong calls them ‘bokeh balls’. This points up a feature of DSLRs that iphone cameras lack, the ability to take photos with a sharp foreground and pleasantly out of focus background. The kind of lens they use instead presents a happy medium where everything is more or less in focus. This may seem desired, but in terms of composition, you want to focus the attention away from the background usually.
So maybe the new dual lens camera has this DSLR-like bokeh.
