AT&T Makes International Data Roaming Slightly Less Extortionate

Do a lot of international traveling and like to bring your iPhone with you? AT&T just made their international data plans a lot more affordable. Don’t get too excited, though: when you’re talking international roaming, “more affordable” still equals “pretty darn extortive.”

Here’s the new International Data plans.

$24.99 gets you 50MB (previously 20MB)
– $49.99 gets you 125MB (previously 50MB)
– $99.99 gets you 275MB (previously 100MB)
– $199.99 gets you 800MB (previously 200MB)
– $10 for every additional 10 megabytes

So definitely an improvement, but if you’re a frequent traveler, it’s still probably better to buy yourself an unlocked iPhone 4 and pick yourself up a pay-as-you-go SIM with data in your destination country.

Per megabytes? Might as well leave your phone at home.
How long would megabytes last if you travelled to another country and you’re a high powered user?
Mine would last 2 days. Then I’ll be running enough to have my contract suspended.
I’ll probably end up with $500 by the time AT&T catches on.

Mhm… USA still live with dinosours. For example if regular Joe travel from Europe to USA, he will pay for 200 Mb something like $10 :))) And we allready have 4G and to surf it cost less than in USA 56,6 Kbs modem :)

    …or, like I have, a jailbroken/unlocked 3GS. Drop in any int’l SIM–>good to go.

I simply don’t have a home these days. I just doled out a ton of money for an iphone unlocked b/c I can’t go anywhere without omnifocus. Gevey chips are just too unreliable and finicky. When my contract runs out I’ll probably just get a pre-paid plan in the U.S. If U.S. voice/data was remotely affordable overseas it would make sense to keep a contract. I think its just a matter of time before phone numbers become for those that travel a lot.

Hi! I’d love to see a post about phone plans while you’re on vacation. I’m headed to Paris in a few weeks and I have no idea what to get for how much from which company. It would be great to have a helpful quick list. Thanx!

Great. I just got back from UK and got shafted. Got caught out by the pro-rating for part of a billing period. Without going into too much boring detail I used most of my data in the first half of my trip, which was in one billing period and very little in the latter part, which was in the next period. After getting home thinking I’d cleverly managed my data usage I found that I’d only got 20% included in the plan in that billing period and had to pay overage for the rest. Be warned…

The usual idea is that you would use NFC to set up the link between the two devices and then do an automatic hand over to a different protocol for doing the actual transfer of data – eg Bluetooth, iphone 5
