Apple’s iPhone 5, expected to launch later this year, will be “thinner and lighter” than the current device, and will feature a much improved camera, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Citing sources in Apple’s supply chain, The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is gearing up to produce 25 million fifth-generation iPhone units by the end of 2011.
The new device will reportedly pack a new wireless chip from Qualcomm, replacing the existing Infineon chips used in the iPhone 4, though it’s currently unclear whether it will support both CDMA and GSM networks.
The report also claims the device will boast an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, an improvement over the iPhone 4’s 5-megapixel lens
While the fifth-generation device will reportedly be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4, there is currently no indication whether it will also sport a new design, or whether it will look similar to the current device as previous speculation has suggested.
Apple’s order of 25 million units may be too vast for Foxconn (Hon Hai), Apple’s current iPhone assembler, to handle, according to WSJ:
Hon Hai, based in Taiwan, is the world’s biggest contract manufacturer of electronics by revenue and is the global assembler for Apple products.
Two of the people, however, cautioned that shipments of the new iPhone could be delayed if Hon Hai can’t improve its yield rate as the new iPhone is “complicated and difficult to assemble.”

shouldn’t you mention somewhere that you have updated and corrected the blog. correcting silly mistakes post publishing is fine but really you should make it clear that is what you have done.

Well, it’s the Wall Street Journal’s source, not ours. Maybe you should tell them?
I don’t get it, if the iPhone 5 is coming out in September why would they have produced ’25 million sixth-generation iPhones’ by the end of 2011?
Either the 5th and 6th generation are coming out within months of each other or there is a typo and it should read end of 2012.
However what I believe is likely is that Apple will be introducing two new iPhones in September. One cheaper version and one premium version. One of these will be redesigned and the other will look similar to an iPhone 4 – which is which I don’t know.

Thanks for your comment, Peter. It should have read “fifth-generation iPhones” — I apologise. It has now been amended.
If you can make it thinner and lighter, I’d prefer instead to increase the battery and keep it the same size. The current size and weight is just fine. Too thin and you get awkward to hold. Can you imagine a credit card sized phone?
I wouldn’t count out iPhone 4S for September. I’m thinking the same phone with an A5 processor, better lens, improved antenna design and will be a universal carrier phone. New design and the “5” moniker is next year. Yet again, this is just another speculation based on Apple’s previous product life cycles.
So are we saying its going to be the iphone pro v iphone. ie mac book v mac book pro.
