Apple Releases Xcode 4.1 Free Development Tools For OS X Lion

Apple’s development tools for OS X and iOS are  joining the OS X Lion launch party today with the release of  Xcode 4.1.  The new version of Xcode is now available as a free download in the Mac App Store or through the regular Apple developer website.

It’s interesting to note that Xcode has always been included free of charge with all Macs and as a free download until recently when it appeared in the Mac App Store with a price tag of $4.99 for non-developers. It isn’t clear why Apple is making it free again, but I don’t plan one asking them why. After all you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

So go get your free copy of Xcode 4.1 which supports OS X 10.7 Lion and iOS 4.3 now via the Mac App Store or at Apple’s developer website.

What are you waiting for?  It is time to start working on the next great OS X Lion or iOS app now!

It’s the “I just bought it and now it’s free” part that annoys me.

    Me too…

Complain to Apple and you’ll probably get a refund.

Me three, five bucks isn’t the worst thing ever.  I hear you have to download and reinstall the entire package (several gigs)… what a pain in the ass.

How is this different than the $100 developer cost?

I complained, they answered me that:

Apple reserves the right to change prices for products offered at the iTunes Store at any time, and regretfully does not provide price protection or refunds in the event of a price drop or promotional offering.

The same thing happened to me. Last month sometime I bought xCode 4 (since I’m learning to program in Objective-C and I don’t want to pay to be a developer yet) and now it’s free, plus I have to download the whole >3gb file again! Why can’t it just prompt me to update in the old xcode??

Yea I figured I’d give objective C a whirl.  The IDE itself is nice, but the #1 knock and the poor rating in the app store are all the result of a terrible system of updating.
