Apple reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels, the company said Wednesday. It marks substantial progress toward the company’s Apple 2030 initiative goal of carbon neutrality.

And, as part of its Earth Day run-up, the company also confirmed rumors of an Apple in-store recycling deal that offers 10% off accessories when you turn in an Apple device through May 16.

“We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030, which touches every part of our business,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, in a press release. “Today, we’re using more clean energy and recycled materials to make our products than ever before, we’re preserving water and preventing waste around the world, and we’re investing big in nature.”

Apple cuts emissions by over 60%, confirms in-store recycling deal

In its annual Environmental Progress Report, Apple highlighted several key accomplishments in its sustainability journey. And it also confirmed rumors of a 10% off accessories deal through May 16 in its stores when you turn in an Apple device for recycling. (More on that below.)

Speaking of recycling, the company said it now uses 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries. That approaches its 2025 goal of reaching 100% for both materials.

The company’s environmental strategy centers on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% compared to 2015 before using high-quality carbon credits to offset remaining emissions. Through comprehensive efforts, including supply chain renewable energy transitions and increased recycled materials usage, Apple avoided an estimated 41 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions last year.

Gains on multiple fronts

Renewable energy implementation continues to expand throughout Apple’s supply chain, with 17.8 gigawatts now operational. This clean energy transition helped suppliers avoid 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024. That represents a 17% increase from the previous year.

Apple secured commitments from 26 semiconductor suppliers to reduce fluorinated greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% by 2030. And 100% of display suppliers made similar pledges. These efforts prevented 8.4 million metric tons of emissions in 2024 alone.

Product innovations reflect Apple’s environmental progress as well. The recently released M4 MacBook Air features more than 55% recycled content overall. That’s highest percentage in any Apple product to date. Last year, Apple introduced its first carbon-neutral Mac with the M4 Mac mini. And customers can now choose carbon-neutral options for any Apple Watch model.

Apple’s water conservation efforts also yield impressive results. Through the Supplier Clean Water Program, Apple and its partners have saved more than 90 billion gallons of fresh water since 2013, with participating suppliers achieving an average water reuse rate of 42% last year.

Waste reduction initiatives continue to make an impact, too. Suppliers redirected about 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills in 2024. Since 2015, Apple’s Zero Waste program eliminated 3.6 million metric tons of waste, equivalent to 4.5 million square meters of landfill space.

Celebrate Earth Day with in-store recycling deal and more

To celebrate Earth Day, Apple is offering customers special incentives in the form of an in-store recycling deal. Through May 16, customers who bring eligible items for in-store recycling will receive 10% off an Apple accessory for purchase the same day. The Apple Trade In program offers credit for devices while ensuring responsible recycling.

In addition, Apple Watch users can earn a limited-edition Earth Day award on April 22 by completing any 30-minute workout. And Apple TV+ is featuring Earth-themed programming, including documentaries and family-friendly content like Jane, Earthsounds and The Secret Lives of Animals. The Tips app now includes an Earth Day collection showing users how to use planet-friendly features on their devices.

As Apple continues its environmental journey, the company acknowledges that the final stretch toward its 2030 goals presents significant challenges.

“As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration, and urgency,” Jackson said.
