Apple is today commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a famous quote on the front page of its website that promotes equality.

Paying homage to the legendary civil rights leader is a tradition for Apple, which has become increasingly focused on supporting equal rights and fighting discrimination in recent years.

“Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights,” reads the quote from King, which adorns the Apple.com homepage today. “You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.”

Apple has removed all promotional images of its products from the page to make King’s photo the focus. Apple CEO Tim Cook also paid tribute on Twitter, saying his team honors King by “working to help achieve justice and equality.”

King’s birthday was officially on Sunday, January 15, but it is celebrated in the U.S. with a national holiday on the third Monday of January each year. However, last year was the first time Apple gave its employees a day off for MLK Day.

In previous years, the company has held special gift-matching promotions, donating $50 for every voluntary hour worked by its employees.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was first and foremost a minister of Christ’s church on Earth. It was his abiding knowledge that we are all God’s creation that underpinned his struggle for fair treatment of black Americans who had been not just marginalized but attacked by government and their fellow men. His non-violent campaign and Biblically sound oratory shamed a generation of racists and inspired many to work hard to serve their heavenly master with diligence and nobility.

The FBI apparently beat Apple to it. Its tweet read “Today, the FBI honors the Rev. Martin L. King Jr and his incredible career fighting for civil rights.” Thing is, this is the same FBI that wiretapped and threatened the man with a sex scandal and in all probability lent a hand in his assassination.

The hypocrisy of the tweet is astounding. Perhaps and given the FBI had harassed Apple on its mobile security, it should also honor King’s late wife and support her (to be published) memoirs (My Life, My Love) that documents the harassment of her and her husband at the hands of the FBI.
