If Apple really is working on a car, what would it look like? And what would we want it to look like and do?
The growing chorus of rumors about Apple’s possible automotive ambitions — and the hard facts about the car designers it’s already recruited — don’t prove Cupertino is working on a car. But if Apple is staffing up to transform the transportation industry, what features might it deliver in its human-transport device?
Here’s what we’d like to see in the very first iCar.
Head-turning design: This goes without saying. Apple is known for its sleek designs, and the first Apple car should be instantly recognizable — and endlessly covetable. More than almost any industry aside from fashion, the automobile biz lives and dies on the way its products look. A head-turning car can be a fetish item of the first order — just ask noted car freak Jony Ive. If Apple’s rumored “Project Titan” is really all about reimagining the minivan, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, we definitely want one that doesn’t look like a mom mobile. Tesla Motors’ aesthetic would be a good place to start. Or the Fisker Karma (RIP alas).
Battery life like the iPhone 6 Plus: Everybody likes the idea of an electric car, but nobody wants to run out of juice in the middle of the countryside. Tesla’s Model S, with the largest battery available, gets less than 300 miles per charge; that’s simply not enough to relieve our anxiety about ending up stranded on the side of the road. We want an electric car with a battery that lasts at least as long as an iPhone 6 Plus, so we can spend a solid day driving without any worries.
Solar panels that charge the car while it’s on the road: Apple recently doubled down on its commitment to solar energy for its California campus and retail stores, with Tim Cook saying, “We know at Apple that climate change is real. Our view is that the time for talk is past and the time for action is now.” If Cupertino is truly committed to renewable energy, a plug-in electric car isn’t enough — that energy will most likely come from a coal-fired plant. We’ll settle for nothing less than beautiful solar panels built into the Apple car’s body so it can charge while it rolls down the road.
Electronically tinted windows: We want windows that will block out the blinding sun or shut out pedestrians’ prying eyes. This type of technology already exists, but we’ll need Apple to perfect it so the perfect mix of visual elegance and supreme privacy is available at the touch of a screen or the utterance of a voice command. Speaking of …
Voice controls powered by Siri: We expect voice-activated everything in our Apple car. Some of this is already available with CarPlay, Apple’s platform for bringing iOS to the car. But Siri’s going to need to seriously step up her game to be truly useful when we’re on the road. Imagine if the Apple AI could handle complicated requests like, “Siri, turn down the AC to 69 degrees, tint the front windshield and find me the nearest coffee shop that sells iced coffee.”

Self-driving modes: We don’t want to cede all our driving privileges to a robotic overlord, but smart self-driving modes seem almost mandatory if Apple is going to push the needle. Self-guiding cars already take the pain out of parallel parking, and the DARPA Grand Challenge has been sending autonomous vehicles into the wild for over a decade. With companies like Google and Tesla pursuing self-driving cars, and Apple rumored to be doing the same, we’re excited about the possibility of napping on solo trips to Los Angeles.
Awesome phone audio: One of the few knocks on the original iPhone was its relatively poor audio quality. Apple’s made great strides in that department over the years. Now let’s see if Tim Cook’s army of engineers can fix one of the most annoying parts of using a hands-free phone: garbled audio that’s barely conversation-ready.
Apple Watch is your key — and much more: Unlocking your car with your Apple Watch is a no-brainer. But what about starting it remotely? Or even summoning it with a simple voice command spoken into your wrist? Imagine it: “Siri, pull up to my current location.” No more struggling to remember where you parked your car or slogging through the rain to retrieve it.
Touch ID to unlock and start your car: Let’s say you forgot your Apple Watch. You’ve always got your fingerprint, and Touch ID should be able to let you into your car — and fire up the engine.
Lightning and USB ports for every seat: Everybody needs their own chargers for all their devices, Apple or otherwise. ‘Nuff said.
Biometrics that track your alertness: Any Apple car should work seamlessly with the Apple Watch and iPhone, constantly monitoring the driver’s alertness to ensure everybody’s safety. Feeling tired or, god forbid, slightly buzzed? Your car can intervene, either shifting into self-driving mode or shutting down automatically.

If they were somehow able to manage all of those things you just requested, you will need another car to carry around the battery for your icar. I’d be happy with a car that could go all day long. USB? Firewire? Charge your crap at home. You can’t have everything.
Seeing the difference going from a new Note 4 to my current iPhone 6 Plus gave me great insight into how Apple does thing differently. If Apple does develop a vehicle I think charging my phone, tablet or other carry ons with will be addressed. Or at least by the “S” version the next year.
iCar 4S
I just hope the gold version will actually be made of gold. ‘Cause otherwise I’ll buy a space shuttle with the same money. :P
I’m in as long as Verizon or AT&T do not get an exclusive deal to their customers first ;) Here’s hoping these all come unlocked ;)
If, as is surely the case, Siri is involved it cannot be necessary to go outside the car to get her. There will need to be a fully functional (at least for car control) edition of Siri running in the car. Too many things can happen to phone signals. Also I wonder how much of the needed power even high efficiency solar cells on the roof and bonnet of a car can provide.
Should it not be inflatable so that it is the safest car in the world like being inside an air bag thus eliminating the Auto insurance industry? Should it not deflate into a sort of rolling suitcase thus revolutionizing the parking/real estate industry? Should it not be marketed in its prototype form first in such a way that the more who sign up to buy it the cheaper each unit becomes?
That’s the problem with Apple, YOU don’t get what you want, Apple gives you what you “want” or what they want you to want
I know right? I mean with the myriad of in things tech out there Apple just forces people to buy their stuff vs all of the other stuff out there. Oh the atrocity never ceases.
Yeah, how can they be so mean? Phhht! I love the idea of a car made by Apple. Solar charging to keep the power topped up, reducing the number of times you need to plug the car in is a must. Apple R&D and engineering will produce a car that will delight users and create a whole new revolution in vehicular transport, just as they have done with computers, music, phones and tablets. I can see Apple investing in nationwide charging stations, possibly partnering with 3rd parties to build them, thus ushering in a nationwide/worldwide shift in the automotive industry to electric cars from gas-powered cars. As usual, Apple will show how it’s done and everyone else will follow.
They don’t give you what you want, they give you want you didn’t even know you wanted.
Perfect time for the Apple Watch to roll out, people would have been perfectly fine with a Casio watch with an Apple logo on the back…
No, they give you stuff you never knew you wanted.
Solar panels will never be efficient enough to power a car. By the time this car comes out all charging will be wireless either with charging pads or without. Tinting glass should just be replaced entirely with flexible lcd displays of the world outside the cabin. Glass is just and added safety hazard in a futuristic car. I would like to see integrated yellow alerts and license plate readers that could automatically notify police of a wanted vehicles last know location without even alerting the Apple Cart driver. And if the car can drive itself, the front seats should be reversible if it is a 4 seater. Valet function would be nice as well so you can step out or a restaurant and have your car waiting.
Too right. Solar panels would maybe charge the stereo, as long as you didn’t have it turned up too high :).
But how about this? Wireless charging by having charge points alongside the roads, say each power pole or road marker. Heck, why not in the road itself?. It would just need the wireless charging tech to extend Far enough.
And if you are worried about carbon emissions but want… Power, get a nuke.
Another idea: Mr Fusion.
I’d also like the windscreen to act as a Hololens type device, so that Sat Nav directions and lane advice can be placed into the environment in real time.
Also yes, charging devices would be no problem, with a current Tesla S battery, using 1% of a full charge you could charge your device once a day for a year. So charging 1 iPhone in each seat wouldn’t really make a dent. And the solar panels charging a secondary battery for the display panels and devices isn’t a terrible idea, but yeah, it wouldn’t charge the main batteries….yet.
The biggest design challenge is that any Apple car can’t have Windows.
apple will look at the problems that exist in the industry over the next 30 years and address that: cars that can’t crash, software is becoming everything in automotive, security of data and auto sw, big data and the car, who owns the data and what can e dome with it; they can’t solve the range problem because they will buy batteries from elsewhere; it’s unlikely they will ever build a car, rather the infrastructure and software and ecoystem is where they will play; fire up the engine? that will be an inverter that powers electric motors, no fires nor starting necessary, by the time apple get anything automotive that a consumer touches you will just boot your car up like an iPad.
what else do y’all think?
I think the BMW i8 looks far better than the Tesla, the Tesla looks more like a Ford Fusion to me. The Mercedes Benz concept car they showed at CES is just unreal looking, but it’s a concept car, but it’s definitely VERY cool looking. I think Apple has their work cut out if they want to have a head turner in the looks department.
So… is should cost $20,000, be made of rice and powered by magic.
It should……..
Screw cars. Apple should create a starship. Then I’ll be impressed.
