Mac owners will finally be able to install OS X El Capitan on machines starting tomorrow, but if you want a taste of the future, registered developers can seed the latest beta of OS X 10.11.1 starting today.

The new beta comes over a week after the first OS X 10.11.1 beta was released to developers. That beta included a number of new emoji such as a taco, burrito, unicorn, middle finger, and a mysterious new eye in speech bubble that has stumped users.

Apple’s release notes for OS X 10.11.1 beta 2 don’t mention any new features, but claims the new software update “improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.”

Devs that have the OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility installed can grab the new software via the ‘Software Update’ option in the Apple menu. If not, you can grab build 15B22c directly from the Dev Center.

Now that the main beta is over, I’m not sure if I should stick to the beta program or go to public releases. I’m on the GM (which from what I understand is a couple builds behind the official public release). I’ve had a few insane bugs on the GM required hard resets, failed trackpad/mouse input, fatal finder issues not resolved with a relaunch, and more. Otherwise I rather enjoy it. However, I now need this system to be as stable as possible, and past reverting to Yosemite, I’m not sure what path to take. Excuse the lengthy inquiry:

I’m newish to beta testing at the OS level, and am especially confused about how the new beta versions and official releases compare, especially since it’s not as simple as just writing over an app like other betas I’ve been involved in.

I’m willing to keep providing feedback and staying in the beta program, but not for the sake of stability. It’s my only system.

So how does it work? Is the beta 10.11.1 the same as what the public 10.11.1 will be, just giving apple a head start on bug fixes for 10.11.2? Or will the 10.11.1 public release be influenced by 10.11.1 bug reports? It appears the GM and final public release are a few builds different, which makes me think 10.11.1 public may be an ironed out build of 10.11.1 beta. However, by the time 10.11.1 public is released, there should be a 10.11.2 beta including its fixes plus more? But will that potentially add new issues? I’m so confused.

If 10.11.1 beta is in theory more stable than 10.11.0 public, I’ll stick with the beta program. If the 10.11.1 beta is likely to introduce NEW bugs from 10.11.0 public, I’m at the point where I need to opt out of the beta program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am experiencing GM bugs and am not sure if I should install the new public release of 10.11, or try the 10.11.1 beta!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

whew, actually some info. on the Beta versus public ElCapitan. i’ve been looking for an hour or so on the difference, if any, and this is the only place to get my questions out. i thought the Beta moniker was a fault/bug issue also. i actually tried re-downloading and Apple said i was already in. apparently(?) the .1 signifies some fixes taking place? when does it become the “real” thing?
