In a striking sign of how the iPad dominates the tablet market, Android phone owners will likely bypass tablets powered by Google’s Honeycomb for Apple, one Wall Street analyst told investors Friday.
Cannacord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley said some Android-based tablets could compete against the iPad, but not until at least 2013. The likely challengers: Samsung, Asus and Amazon. A Microsoft tablet in 2012 “could sell well, particularly to the enterprise channel,” further shaking RIM’s chances of recovery, according to the analyst.
However, Apple is building a massive base of 250 million iOS users at the end of fiscal 2011 – nearly doubling by the end of 2012, Walkley writes. The growing iOS user base coupled with an expected 40 percent replacement rate prompts him to expect 50 million “iOS replacement sales” in fiscal 2011, 100 million in fiscal 2012 and 200 million in fiscal 2013.
In addition, carrier checks find the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 were top-sellers at AT&T and Verizon. Walkley raised his 2011 iPhone estimate to 77.3 million units, up from 75.5 million, and his 2012 iPhone sales estimate to 100.2 million handsets, up from 94 million units. Similarly, the analyst also increased his iPad 2 sales estimate for 2012 to 55.1 million, up from 53.8 million.
Apple’s base of iOS users “will drive sustained longer-term earnings growth and enable it to maintain a key competitive advantage versus its competitors,” the Cannacord Genuity analyst concludes.

Nobody buys Android tablets! Apple not only pioneered the Tablet Market, but dominate it. Look at the numbers, especially the Xoom (which JUST dropped $100 today).

That’s interesting considering apple just made their beta program http://adf.ly/21TOf open to the public.
I used to have an iPhone, switched to an Evo last year so I could do a bit more with my phone. Just bought an iPad 2 a month or two ago, didn’t even consider an Android tablet. I have a 2 year old that will use it, and he needs to be protected from himself, and Apple does that. I will buy an Android tablet when they iron the kinks out, probably the Amazon tablet.
Agree. I have an EVO4G but use an iPad as my tablet. I like having access to both platforms on a daily basis. I also have friends who have the same preference.
Same here. I’m switching to Android phone at the end of the year, but I’m planning on buying an iPad
Honeycomb tablets aren’t as reliable yet.. ONce they work out the bugs, it will be as popular as the EVO and Droid series were to smartphones
What kind of bullshit spam are you linking to? Beware…
They definitely revolutionized it, but like the touchscreen phone (which they also revolutionized), they will lose market share to Android when they get it working smoothly.
At the end of the day, they don’t care… and who could blame them. Did Apple, or their bottom line, ever get concerned about only having a 5% market share on PCs? Nope, they have a business model that works, and they are sticking to it. They are a lot smarter than most companies.
Same thing I said yesterday on a post this spammer made yesterday. DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK! Ban this person if you can…please!
I’m one of those people. It actually makes sense not to own an iPhone and an iPad. My Android can get roughed up, and I’m okay with that. I use it more as a phone than for its apps. But then I can get my app fix with Apple’s App Store on the iPad. Wouldn’t even consider buying an Android tablet.
This is true. I am one.
This is true. I am one.
Well I have both Android phone and iPhone, but I bought an iPad 2. Will wait for one ortwogenerations of Android tablet before considering to switch.
I’m in a very similar situation, I also have an Evo that I replaced my 3GS with. And I bought an iPad2 a couple months ago. Maybe I’ll get an Android Tablet someday, or maybe my next phone will be an iPhone, whatever is the best at the time.
Brand loyalty only means you limit your buying choices, and I love all my devices currently. If something better comes out, then I’ll switch to it, regardless of brand.
I am one to disagree a bit, as much as I like the look of the iPad I am one whose love of Linux, Android and anything Open Source, my first tablet will be powered by Google’s Honycomb powered tablet.
I would buy an iPad as well if money wasn’t an issue, but Google’s Honeycomb powered tablet first.
No doubt the cheap ones will come, but part of the problem the Android manufacturers are haing is reaching Apples price in a 10″ tablet…
True for me as well. I have a Nexus One, I skipped on the iPad 1 and other early new-generation tablets, but then I bought an iPad 2 this year. In fact, I ordered it two days after its release her ein the UK.
The main reason for me going with Apple for my first tablet is due to the developed software platform. Mobile phones are more about the communication, quick browsing and general information finding apps (something Google’s suite of apps excel at) whilst tablets need more developed software for media and productivity.
Personally I love watching movies on my iPad 2 and working on novel manuscripts, sometimes when paired with a wireless keyboard. From what I’ve seen of Android tablets even of this year, they can’t really beat that and definitely not at the same price point.
It’s not about brand loyalty, it is about what works best for the user/consumer.
Android has poor content for tablets compared to content available on the ipad, considering Apple are seen as a high price brand theoretically Android tablets should be at least half the price of the ipad.
Well, all I can say is this is my experience.
I’ve been a PC owners for 26 years. I had a Blackberry for five years before moving to Android last November and have come to realize that Andoid, in word, sucks. (The HTC Sense software crashes with amazing frequency, and there is no place for a network proxy making the phone a paperweight at work.).
I’m typing this from my iPad. When either T-Mobile gets the iPhone or ATT gets T-Mobile, I’ll be trading in the Android phone for I hope an iPhone 5. And whenever its time for a new desktop computer, it will almost definitely be an iMac.
I have an android phone because it is customizable for quick access to information but an iPad because of the apps.
Same was said when the Android phone came out.

Ummm yes they did and still do. The fact of the matter is Microcrap slaughtered them in the desktop OS wars to the point of near extinction. Apple just got lucky in that they were able to branch out to other markets while Microcrap became fat and lazy.
Android isn’t open source. Linux is open sourced that is correct but android IS NOT open source. I wish people would get it right already.
The main reason android users would buy an iPad is because, they wish to be a part of both worlds. They already have access to everything android has to offer through their phone, and with choosing a device from apple they have the opportunity to choose which OS or app they prefer for which activities.
