The TrueTone display on the new iPad Pro may actually be worth all the hype.
Experts at the display evaluating site DisplayMate have finally put the 9.7-inch iPad Pro display through a gauntlet of extensive testing and discovered that Apple’s new display is “by far the best performing mobile LCD display that has ever been tested.”
Dr Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate, says that the new iPad Pro breaks many display performance records. In fact, DisplayMate found Apple’s claim that the iPad Pro features the same color range as the digital cinema industry is totally legit.
Despite being cheaper than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the new 9.7-inch unit includes many new features and enhancements you won’t get on the bigger model, including the TrueTone display which is better than that found on the old iPad Pro that debuted in November of 2015.
In his report, Dr. Soneira reveals the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is more color-accurate than “any mobile display, monitor, TV, or UHD (ultra-high-definition) TV that you have… It is the most accurate display we have ever measured. It is visually indistinguishable from perfect.”
Along with the amazing color accuracy, DisplayMate’s review praises the iPad Pro’s anti-reflective coating. The new coating only reflects 1.7% of ambient light, which is the lowest screen reflectance of any mobile display.
As for the TrueTone feature, the tests found that it’s really more of a subjective experience. You can use it to your own comfort level, or switch hues using iOS 9.3’s NightShift mode, but it’s not a completely vital new enhancement.

Really hope True-Tone makes its debut this year with the iPhone 7.
The best way to tell the improvement is to turn it off and see how strangely blue the screen gets. Our eyes have just got used to it over the years, but it is immediately noticeable when you switch TrueTone on and off. I notice the difference right away when I look between my iPad and my iPhone.
Loving the screen on my new iPad Pro 9.7″, but true tone ruins it for me. I’ll keep my cool blue tones.
