The iconic 2013 “trash can” Mac Pro took its first step towards official retirement, as Apple added it to its vintage product list.

Apple also added several iPads launched in 2018 and the 2019 13-inch MacBook Air to its vintage products list.

Trash can Mac Pro will soon become obsolete

12 years after its launch, the Mac Pro still stands out for its “trash can” design. It drew widespread mockery for resembling a Japanese garbage can. It was also later criticized for its poor thermal design, leading to heating issues. Yet, Apple sold the trash can Mac Pro until December 2019, replacing it with the cheesegrater-inspired Mac Pro.

The company typically marks a product as vintage five years after it stops retail sales. This explains why Apple is only now adding the 2013 Mac Pro to its vintage product list.

While the company still offers repair support for vintage products, it depends on the availability of replacement parts. So, if parts are not available, Apple can refuse repair.

Apple moves a product to its obsolete list two years after marking it as vintage, ending all repair support.

MacBook Air and 2018 iPad Pro now officially vintage

The 2019 13-inch MacBook Air, 2019 iMac, and the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2018) also join Apple’s vintage product list. The 128GB iPhone 8 joins the list too, following its other storage variants that were added a few months earlier.

Additionally, the company marked the second-gen AirPort Express, AirPort Time Capsules and AirPort Extreme as obsolete, ending repair support for them. So, if you still use an AirPort Express or Time Capsule (2TB and 3TB), you might want to baby them to ensure they last as long as possible.

Apple shows no signs of returning to the router market. So, if they stop working, you’ll need to rely on third-party options.
