When it comes to monitoring your Mac’s status, such as the CPU or RAM usage, you have a couple different options. You can use menu bar applications which are often costly, or Dashboard widgets that are inconvenient to access. If neither of these sound like good options to you, monitoring your system with Activity Monitor might be a good option. It’s free, (after all, it’s built into Mac OS X), and it lets you display handy information right from the dock icon. In this video, I’ll show you how to set it up.

And to think that I’ve been wasting all of my time using the iStat widget. Thanks, guys!

This has been out for awhile. The downside is that Activity Monitor can occasionally eat up resources, especially when you’re already low on free RAM.
I believe I should dig deep into some basic functions of Mac’s apps. Thanks for the Video Mike. I applied it already, along with the video.
MenuMeters does the job for free and it uses the top menu bar for its status icons.

Caxxo… ma lo puoi fare solo con Snow Leopard!
… Useful post, but i was wondering for some time now , how can i change my applications folder on the dock so it would look like yours. And of course not only the applications folder but the documents and downloads aswel ! Can you give me a clue ? :)
they are custom transparent images I made. I put them in the respective folders and named them _.icns so that it appears first in alphabetical order. Drag the folder to the dock, that’s all!
… It sounds kind of complicated , is there any chance that you can make a How To video on the subject? or maybe post the transparent images as a Cloud link with instructions ? I hope i don’t sound cheeky! thx anyway
… OOOO PLEASE give a cloud link of these AMAZING custom transparent images that you made pleaseeeeeee!!!
