Fring Updates Its App To Allow Voice And Video Over 3G

Who knows — soon, having to watch your cell minutes might just be a thing of the past, as more communication apps embrace VoIP over 3G after Apple nixed its no-Internet-calls-over-3G policy. The latest to do so is Fring, announcing today that calls — and video calls — can now be made over the 3G network (in addition to the already available wifi call/videocall function).

Scarcely two weeks after iCall started the ball rolling by allowing 3G VoIP calls, Fring now follows suit2; what’s cool about Fring — besides the previously mentioned video calls — is that if you have a SkypeOut account, it can now be used to make 3G calls through Fring.

Ona quick test call over 3G, the voice quality seemed a little muffled compared to over wifi, but still useable; videocalling is likely to be an exercise in patience. If you already have the free Fring app, no update is necessary.
