For as long as there have been home computers, users have been looking for ways to increase their storage capacity. The first harddrives that entered the market in the 1980’s were difficult to install, had small capacity limits, and were remarkably expensive, even by today’s standards.

By contrast, today you can easily increase the capacity of your MacBook Air 13” or MacBook Pro Retina 15” by up to a huge 128GB for a paltry $30 with the HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander, 25% off at Cult of Mac Deals for a limited time.

The HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander is a plug-and-play microSD adaptor that sits completely flushed inside your MacBook’s SD memory card slot. It even has an aluminum cap that matches the finish of your MacBook, so no one but you will know it’s there.

Simply put any microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC (including 128GB) memory card into the HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander, and you’ve got storage space to spare for anything you want: Photos, music, movies. You decide what to put onto the memory card.

The HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander supports high speed Class 10/UHS-I/U1/U3 up to 95MB/s memory cards so your data can be stored – and retrieved – at lightning fast speeds whenever you need it. There is a HyperDrive available for both the MacBook Air 13” as well as the MacBook Pro Retina 15”.

As a bonus, if you purchase the HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander, you’ll also receive a free 8GB class 10 microSD memory card to get you started using your new expanded storage right away.

Why economize your MacBook’s internal storage capacity? Have all the space you need with the HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander with bonus 8GB microSD card, just $29.99 with free US shipping at Cult of Mac Deals for a limited time.

Anyone know off hand the I./O speed of these (of course memory card will dictate that too) but wondering what kind of performance this would offer. Would it be bootable (if you installed os on it of course) and practical? I’m wanting to maybe put my bootcamp partition on it and I only use Windows for minimal tasks.

That is my question too. I have a 64g SD in my MBA and it is incredibly slow. Having more capacity is not so great if it takes 5 minutes to down/upload a large file. The Hyperdrive actually fits flush to the MBA as opposed to my SD which sticks out and could cause some issues if I drop the Mac on that spot.

“The HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander supports high speed Class 10/UHS-I/U1/U3 up to 95MB/s memory cards”

      Right there in the article.

Odd, this looks almost exactly like the Nifty Minidrive: http://minidrive.bynifty.com

  3. tjwolf says:

Ok, I guess I must be stupid – what’s the difference between this and a simple SD card? Just the fact that it sits flush and has an aluminum finish?

      • tjwolf says:

I guess with such a mature response, an explanation should not be expected. But I’ll try again anyway: what is the difference? It’s an SD slot after all, so these drives can’t be any faster than the cards they contain (at least on writes; on reads they might have used a cache?). Also, what is the maximum speed achievable over the SD “protocol”?

      • PMB01 says:

No need to be an asshole. I answered your question.

“The HyperDrive MacBook Storage Expander supports high speed Class 10/UHS-I/U1/U3 up to 95MB/s memory cards”

As I pointed out to someone else, it’s right there in the article. You really need to work on your reading comprehension.

      • tjwolf says:

So, basically, provided you had a high speed Class 10/UHS-1/U1/U3 card in SD form factor, you wouldn’t need this at all.

      • PMB01 says:

        Are you really that slow?

A standard SD card would stick out of the slot. The entire point of this is to not stick out of the slot and be discrete.

      • tjwolf says:

So then your prior comment about its support of “Class 10/UHS-I/U1/U3 up to 95MB/s memory cards” is just so much noise – it’s only real value is to sit flush with the machine.

      • PMB01 says:

I answered your initial question. You asked about speed; I showed you the answer in the article. Reading comprehension really isn’t your strong suit.

  4. azamino says:

this does not sit flush. however if you buy the Transcend JetDrive, which has also faster I/O speed. it does sit flush and looks very “apple” – not a dongle look.

    • bondr006 says:

The HyperDrive does sit flush. If you click the link and read the description in Cult of Mac deals, it says:

“It’s a plug-and-play microSD adaptor that sits completely flushed inside
the MacBook SD memory card slot with an aluminum cap that matches the
      finish of your MacBook.”
