Apple appears to have partially backed down in a clash with the Indian government over whether or not to help develop an anti-spam application for iOS, having previously refused to do so because of privacy concerns.

The issue concerned a so-called “Do Not Disturb” app, which the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India wanted Apple to distribute on the App Store. The app is already available on Android.

Another way to circumvent the iPhone X’s Face ID security system has been discovered — but, don’t worry, it’s not going to be one that affects the overwhelming majority of users.

The Face ID “hacker” in question is the fifth-grade son of an iPhone X owner, who apparently looks close enough to his mom in appearance that the system recognizes them both as the same person.

That’s its strongest quarter so far in 2017, and enough that Apple retook the wearable device lead — with rivals Xiaomi and Fitbit shipping 3.6 million and 3.5 million bands, respectively.

A number of iPhone X users are complaining about poor sound quality from the new handset’s front-facing earpiece speaker when it is at high volume. The complaints allege that some users are hearing buzzing or crackling sounds when using the device, regardless of whether this is while making phone calls, listening to music, watching videos, or using apps.

While it doesn’t appear to affect every iPhone X unit, the issue has been widely reported on social media, as well as on websites such as Reddit. It’s not clear whether this is a software issue or possibly one involving the new iPhone’s hardware.

The iPhone X may prove even more successful than previously thought, and this is likely to have an impact on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, claims KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a note issued to clients over the weekend, Kuo said that Apple is likely to sell between 22 and 24 million iPhone X handsets over the holiday quarter, with production during the same period likely to be in the region of 25 to 27 million units.

What increased demand means for the iPhone 8, however, is that production is likely to decline by 50 to 60 percent, compared to the holiday quarter. This is due to demand being “lower than expected.”

Apple supply maker Japan Display has announced disappointing quarterly earnings, based in part on Apple’s shift to using OLED displays for the iPhone X.

While Japan Display still makes the LCD screens for the current generation iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the “sluggish” sales of these devices have meant that its earnings have continued to fall. The company posted a net loss of 68 billion yen ($596 million) for the first half of fiscal 2017, an increased loss from the 16.7 billion yen it posted for the same period in 2016.

The iPhone ranked as the world’s top shipping smart phone in the third quarter of 2017 — but the iPhone 8 didn’t even crack the top five.

Instead, older (and cheaper) iPhones dominated the list. That doesn’t mean iPhone 8 tanked, though. A variety of factors account for its relatively low numbers.

The new iPhone X may retail for over $1,000, but according to a teardown by engineers at IHS Markit, the 64GB model costs Apple in the vicinity of just $370.25.

That’s around $50 more than the previous most expensive iPhone, the 256GB iPhone 8 Plus. Understandably, what makes the biggest difference in terms of components are the TrueDepth sensor and the Super Retina OLED display.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel has revealed that Snapchat’s app will be undergoing a major redesign, after the company fell short of expected growth projections for the quarter.

In a letter to investors, Spiegel blamed the difficulties on the service being too difficult for many users to understand. “One thing we have heard over the years is that Snapchat is difficult to understand or hard to use,” he wrote — adding that, “Our team has been working on responding to this feedback.”
