Ed Hardy has been writing full-time about tech for 25 years, and using it for much longer than that. His intro to Apple was a Macintosh Classic II (which he still has), but now he uses a 13-inch iPad Pro as his primary computer. New betas are out for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple Watch. Photo: Apple
Apple just released the third beta versions of iOS 12.1.3 and macOS Mojave 10.14.3 to developers and the public. The same is true for a new tvOS 12.1.2 beta. Only developers got access to the new watchOS 5.1.3 beta introduced today, though.
But don’t get your hopes up for exciting new features.
Don’t expect the screen cutouts in many smartphones to go away, despite a big announcement made today. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
AMS, a company that makes iPhone sensors, caught many people’s attention today with it’s just-announced sensor it says has the possibility of “potentially eliminating the bezel entirely.” Bezels are the dead space around phone screens that device makers are trying to eliminate.
This new sensor can sit under OLED displays so it doesn’t clutter up the front of the phone. Unfortunately, AMS’s latest offering only does some of the jobs done by front-facing sensors currently located in display bezels, or in a screen notch in the iPhone’s case.

Zagg is using the Consumer Electronics Show to unveil a trio of clip-on keyboards for the newest iPad Pro and iPad models: the Slim Book Go, Rugged Book Go, and Messenger Folio. These range from lightweight to more rugged options.
In addition, Zagg subsidiary InvisibleShield launched advanced screen protectors for the 2018 iPads that won a CES award.

The 2019 iPhone will have a trio of camera lenses in an unusual configuration, if an unconfirmed report is correct.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors that Apple’s next model will have three rear-facing camera lenses but the way they’ll supposedly be arranged on the device is new.
Update: With the iPhone 11 series now official, turns out this image from January is almost completely accurate.
This year’s iOS 13 could bring dramatic benefits to the iPad Pro in multitasking and USB-C support. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Expect 2019 to be a big year for Apple’s iPad tablets. And for professional-grade Macs, too. The next 12 months won’t be as significant for the iPhone and Apple Watch lines, though there will certainly be some improvements.
Services and software are as important to Apple as hardware, so expect the long-awaited video service to arrive, and we predict a resurgence in augmented reality games too.
Read on for all our predictions for the most important changes in the Apple ecosystem this year.
New mophie powerstation batteries, including this one, have a USB-C and a USB-A port. Photo: mophie/Zagg
mophie just unveiled a pair of external batteries designed to supply up to 18W of power. They can give recent iPhone models up to a 50 percent charge in half an hour.
This is possible because the new powerstation PD and PD XL each have a USB-C port, enabling them to transfer more power than older USB-A ports.
We take a look at what really changed for Apple and other tech companies in 2018. Photo: Cult of Mac
Growing concerns about how much companies are spying on us tops our list of the most significant tech trends of 2018. Also on the list are some big changes in applications, a trend in phone design, and a new type of device that became nearly ubiquitous.
As the new year begins, let’s take a look back at what changed for Apple and the tech world over the past 12 months.
iPhone XR sales in its first month were as about as strong as those of previous Apple bandsets right after their launches. Photo: Apple
The iPhone XR got off to a fairly strong start. In November, this just-launched model made up 30 percent of Apple’s U.S. sales, slightly higher than the iPhone X in Nov. 2017.
But the standout aspect of the XR’s launch is this new model drew in a higher percentage of Android fans than any Apple device in years.
None of the Cult of Mac iPad Pro units came bent. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Apple’s VP of hardware engineering reportedly says that the slight bend in some 2018 iPad Pro units is nothing unusual.
Dan Riccio tald the owner of a bent tablet that the variance from straight in any unit is less than 400 microns, which is less than in previous iPad models.
Is your eGPU working under macOS Catalina? Photo: Apple
The new Blackmagic eGPU Pro adds a Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics processor to any Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 port. It just debuted on the Apple Store, who promises it gives “workstation-class graphics performance.”
But you might want to be sitting down when you hear the price.
Parallels Desktop is now owned by Corel, which hopefully be for the good of users. Photo: Parallels
Corel Corp. has acquired Parallels Desktop, software that enables Macs to run Windows, as well as the company that produces it. This shouldn’t make fans of this app nervous, as Corel promises to make “significant investment” in the business.
Corel is best known for its graphics applications for Windows, like CorelDRAW and PaintShop Pro. It also offers multimedia apps. And now it makes desktop virtualization software.
With an iPhone in China, apps close by shrinking, not by sliding off the screen. Screenshot: Joe Rossignol/YouTube
There’s now proof that Apple rushed iOS 12.1.2 out primarily to make changes to iPhones in China. We also have confirmation of exactly what the modifications are.
These were designed to convince a Chinese court that iPhones don’t infringe on two Qualcomm patents. The hope is that court will then reverse an iPhone sales ban that went into effect in that country last week.
The first version of Apple Maps was terrible. Driving-directions-that-can-get-you-killed terrible. And that was the making of Waze. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Waze CEO Norm Bardin will never forget the day his company started on the path from small startup to becoming practically a household name. He says the beginning of this rise is all due to Apple and its CEO.
But that wasn’t really Tim Cook’s plan. Waze’s success is due to a bad, bad time for Apple.
This aluminium stand saves you from having to reach around to the back of your iMac to get to the USB ports. Photo: Satechi
Satechi just launched an aluminumiMac stand with a built-in USB-C hub. Not only will it give your computer some additional height, it makes it much easier to connect a variety of external peripherals.
The iMac comes with multiple built-in USB ports, but the ones in this hub are easier to access.

Andrew Kim used to be a senior designer at Tesla where he contributed to the development of numerous car models. Recently, however, he joined the list of people who’ve left that car company for Apple.
It’s not yet known what projects Kim is working on for his new employer, but he could be contributing to Apple’s autonomous vehicle project. That said, Kim’s design experience extends beyond cars.
In most of the world, iOS 12.1.2 fixes some bugs. But in China, it might remove some features. Photo: Tim Cook/Weibo
Apple has rushed out iOS 12.1.2 after a single round of beta testing. This highly unusual move could be part of the company’s response to a recent ban on iPhone sales in China.
The release notes on this new version say nothing about that though, just indicating that iOS 12.1.2 fixes some small issues.
What do you think of an iPhone with in-screen Touch ID and Face ID? It could have happened. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
An Apple patent filing is basically a white paper on the advantages of using dual biometric security systems. This makes it clear the company nearly made a device that offered facial recognition and a fingerprint scanner.
In the end, though, Apple decided to replace Touch ID with Face ID.

It isn’t Apple’s responsibility to prevent you from doing dangerous things with your iPhone.
That’s the decision of an appeals court in California this morning in a case related to a man who crashed while driving and apparently making a video call on his iPhone. The ruling puts it much more formally, of course.
Any of these Dodocases can hold your iPhone and your credit cards, driver license, etc. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Apple Pay and electronic IDs are removing the need for a wallet, but why wait? Try a Dodocase that holds your phone as well as your drivers license, credit cards, etc.
We went hands on with three of this company’s leather iPhone wallet cases so we can report how they stand up to real-world use.
“Can you believe this guy’s bank password is ‘password’? I love idiots.” Photo: Donald Tong/Pexels CC
You lock your house, right? And your car? It’s equally important to lock your data with a secure password. But year after year people insist on using the same easily-guessed passcodes.
The list of “Worst Passwords of 2018” is out, and if your favorite is on there you really need to change it to something more secure.
Tumblr is back as its NSFW content is in the process of being removed. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Tumblr’s exile from the iOS App Store is over, but the company behind it had to kick all forms of pornography off the platform to be allowed to return.
While that decision is controversial, it did mean that this blogging app can be again be downloaded to iPhone and iPad.
