iPadOS 15 lets applications request more than the usual amount of RAM. This removes a limitation in iOS 14 that kept apps from taking full advantage of the 2021 iPad Pro models with more RAM than any of their predecessors.
The iPadOS version that’s in beta testing includes the option to go past the standard limit on RAM access. The boolean increased-memory.limit lets developers “inform the system that some of your app’s core features may perform better by exceeding the default app memory limit on supported devices.”
Apple’s documentation doesn’t say what the default limit is, but it’s supposedly 5GB.
You can never have too much iPad RAM
In iPadOS 14, the RAM limit for applications cannot be exceeded. But until recently, no Apple tablet had more than 6GB of RAM, so the limitation was moot.
But that changed when the 2021 iPad Pro series launched. Even base configurations have 8GB of RAM and some versions have 16GB. So until iPadOS 15 is released to the general public, users of the latest models won‘t be able to take full advantage of all the additional RAM.
This probably won‘t be noticeable for average users, but users of graphic-design software need all the RAM they can get. It’s these people who’ll be waiting eagerly for the OS update.
While Apple took the wraps off iOS 15 at WWDC in early June, and a public beta is scheduled to start in July, the full release isn’t scheduled until autumn — probably September.
