Apple might make a Mariah Carey Christmas special a regular part of the Apple TV+ holiday slate. A new report suggests Apple and the superstar songstress are already in talks about a 2021 follow-up to the surprisingly popular Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special.

An alleged “insider” told The Sun:

“Mariah created the Christmas special for Apple as a one-off but it was a runaway hit. No one could have predicted its success and it went to No1 in their charts in over 100 countries. Bosses at Apple now want to secure her for another special show next year. Mariah’s team are, of course, completely behind it and everyone is going to do what they can to make it happen.”

The report adds that Apple supposedly spent more than $5.3 million on the Christmas special. (You can check out Cult of Mac‘s review of it here.) This number looks like it’ll increase next year as Apple is “willing to splash the cash” to make a sequel even bigger.

From Apple’s perspective, it would seem this is a no-brainer. If the report proves accurate — and Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special did indeed rank as Apple TV+’s No. 1 show in more than 100 countries — of course Cupertino is going to want a follow-up.

Especially since $5.3 million is, relative to what Apple spends on some of its shows, a pittance. By comparison, a single episode of The Morning Show reportedly costs $15 million. Meanwhile, the rights to Tom Hanks World War II movie Greyhound supposedly set Apple back $70 million.
