While millions of children around the world stuck inside as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Duolingo’s newest app couldn’t have come at a better time. It boasts more than 300 lessons — all completely free — that help teach kids aged three through six to read.
Schools in many countries are closed right, and will be for some time, but it doesn’t mean kids have to miss out on an eduction. There are hundreds of terrific apps on iOS that ensure the learning can continue at home, and many of them are free to use.
Duolingo ABC is one of the latest, and it packs bags of content that promises to help teach the alphabet, phonics, spelling, and more.
Duolingo ABC teaches kids for free
The app does this using a number of methods, some of which will be familiar to those who have previously used Duolingo — the world’s number one education app, to learn a new language — such as matching the right picture with a highlighted words.
Others ask kids to form a sentence by placing words in the correct order, and some teach spelling and handwriting skills using letter tracing. Each one was designed with literacy and early education experts.

Duolingo ABC won’t ask you to cough up a penny for anything (there are no in-app purchases) and it won’t display a single ad. It doesn’t require a data connection, either, so it can be used anywhere — in the car, at a restaurant, even on a plane.
The app is available today in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. You can download it now from the App Store.
