Sir Jony Ive is now Dr. Jony Ive, thanks to one of the most prestigious universities in the U.K., which gave Apple’s design guru an honorary doctorate in science.

The University of Cambridge honored seven of the U.K.’s most distinguished individuals with the highest honor the school can bestow to outsiders in a special ceremony this week. Leaders in fields from computer science to sports were among the honorees during the Cambridge ceremony, but none were quite as distinguished as Jony Ive.

In an announcement commemorating the honorees, Cambridge praised Ive for his work designing personal computers.

“The man credited with introducing elegance, purity and beauty to the design of personal computers as Apple’s chief designer was also honoured. A doctorate in science was conferred on Sir Jonathan Ive, Chief Design Officer at Apple, in recognition of his impact on the world of computing and in making technology approachable through design.”

This is the first of two honorary doctorate degrees the Apple design chief is set to collect this month, as Cambridge’s rival Oxford plans to honor Ive with a doctorate of science next week alongside nine other prominent U.K. scientists, musicians and philosophers.

I really, really really don’t like to see universities stamping your “brands” in people whole talent was’t provided by the university . People like Johnny, Steve, Bill, etc… gave the back to universities and show to the world that universities is not essencial for the success. The knowledge belongs to the humans , not to entities. I think Johnny (and the others) supposed to be proud to be winners that’s take a different way to reach the success. This mean be against the system.

Really, universities are not essential for success? Okay, let’s imagine Steve Jobs starting all over again but this time ban him from using any research from universities and hiring any employee who studied in a university. I want to see how successful he will be this time around.

Then I hope you realize how stupid your “universities are not essential for success” slogan is. Maybe a university degree is not essential, but centers of higher learning definitely are.

Steve Jobs, Gates, Richard Brandson, Michael Dell..the list is incredible huge, chap..I don’t mind if you are studing/studied a lot and now I’m slapping your face with the reality ;) The world belongs to smart people, not hard workers – Unless if you are in some field such as laws, health, engineering… It’s not Ive’s case or jobs or gate. Btw, I’m not Gates, Steve, Ive but the 2 guys on the next desks had PhD. in Cambridge and my salary is bigger ;)

“Dr, Jony Ives” sounds like a techno DJ. Maybe he’ll do some work at Beats1?
