Ka-ching! Apple cranks up Mac prices in 7 countries

Apple is ramping up the prices for its entire Mac lineup in seven countries around the world — but don’t blame Cupertino!

Customers in Australia, Brazil, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway and Thailand will all be paying up to 20 percent more for their MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, and Mac mini devices due to currency fluctuations in the global economy, causing Apple to rethink its prices.

In New Zealand, for example, a MacBook Air now costs between NZ$5,199 and $2,199 — up from the NZ$1,399.00 to NZ$1,799.00 price range it previously sold for. In Brazil, the cost for that same product increased from R$ 5.899,00 — R$ 7.699,00 up to R$ 8.499,00 — R$ 11.499,00. Other countries mentioned show similar price hikes, so make sure you check out your local Apple Online Store if you’re a non-U.S. customer.

It’s a problem for Apple that inevitably generates negative press, despite basically having its hand forced as international currency rates fluctuate next to U.S. dollar prices. Earlier this week, Apple also raised prices for apps in Australia, Indonesia, and Sweden.

No wonder some people have turned to iPhones in their quest for a stable currency!

Sorry, but the information is misleading and untrue. Here, in Brazil the prices were raised up to 50 %. The MacBook Pro de 13″ saw an adjustment from R$ 11.499,00 to R$ 16.999,00 (47.8%). Nothing justifies such a raise in the prices, specially considering that the same model is sold in the U.S. For US$ 1.799, which could be bought there and taken to Brazil, paying customs (65% aprox) and would result in a total of R$ 11.590,00. It’s time for the U.S. customers to stop blaming only the markets of emerging countries and realize that Apple wants to take advantage of that, specially because it’s convenient for the company to supercharge their products in those countries, incentivating the people to buy abroad so Apple doesn’t have to invest in infrastructure in those countries and assistance for their customers.

There wasn’t a “rule” regarding the Brazilian goverment about imposing crazy mad taxes if the company didn’t build a factory there to support the local commerce?? I think there was an article about that and Nintendo leaving Brazil due to that taxes.

What I found curious is when any US citizen is complaining about the price and here in Mexico we pay like 20 – 30% even when we get paid less but oh well, that is the price to be an Apple fanboy :(

No, there isn’t. Actually, due to international treaties, Brazil can’t impose this “rule” you are refering to. The only tax that can be charged is the tax for imported products. Brazil, such as other countries that are members of WTO can’t discriminate products based by their source other than by imposing the importation tax. And even so, Apple has a factory here, which just makes more absurd the prices.

An observation, respectfully. Both the title and the accompanying picture of a wad of cash are not exactly true. Yes, Apple has increased prices, but that is due to fluctuations in world currencies, not because Apple has suddenly become super villain crazy. It makes it seem like click bait.
