It’s time for our weekly digest of tiny iPhone reviews, courtesy of iPhoneTiny.com, with some extra commentary exclusive to Cult of Mac.
This time, we review Angry Birds, Bloom, FallDown!, Icy Escort, RandomPlay, Sir Revs-a-Lot, SteamPunk Hockey, Vector Runner
APP OF THE WEEK
Angry Birds: Artillery game w/ suicidal pig-hating birds. Low replay value & frustrates, but fun while it lasts $0.99 4/5 https://is.gd/9P1gI (fixed link—thanks, Rory)
SteamPunk Hockey: Beautifully designed ‘steampunk’ air hockey. Let down by crazed AI, but OK in two-player mode. 2/5 Free https://is.gd/94QAA
Vector Runner: Exhilarating survival racer/avoid ’em up. Lacks depth but fab visuals & great in short bursts. 4/5 $0.99 https://is.gd/94Sdr
Bloom: Pretty Eno-designed ambient music generator, but harder than TonePad for getting great results. 3/5 $3.99 https://is.gd/9wDV6
FallDown!: Bog-standard ‘drop the rolling ball through the holes’ tilt-based vertical platform game. 2/5 Free https://is.gd/9BTrS
Sir Revs-a-Lot: Cute, playable car vs aliens ‘keepie-up’ game, reminiscent of IndestructoTank. 3/5 $0.99 https://is.gd/9BVRV
Icy Escort: Charming but short-lived (due to low difficulty) one-thumb platformer. Worth getting for nowt, tho’. 3/5 Free https://is.gd/9I8FJ
RandomPlay: Good-looking cover-art-based music randomiser. Could do with swipe-to-skip control, though. 3/5 $0.99 https://is.gd/9LBzZ
A fight to the finish this week, between Angry Birds and Vector Runner—two great games, both of which are worth buying. The games also highlight the best aspect of App Store games—devs can do pretty much whatever they want, providing intuitive and fun games for very little money, whether they involve high-octane racing thrills (Vector Runner) or, um, catapulting suicidal pig-hating birds at various ramshackle contraptions.
