OS X Yosemite’s Mail app is a Mac-crashing memory hog, but that might be good news for Microsoft — it appears from new leaked images that Redmond is readying a special version of Outlook built especially for the new Apple OS X. And Office probably won’t be far behind.
The images leaked on Chinese site cnBeta and show a new version of Outlook that boasts Yosemite’s simple, flat design language.
The user interface looks something like a mashup between the default OS X Mail app and Outlook for Windows. According to cnBeta, the new Outlook for Mac will bring better support for cloud documents, integration with Yosemite’s Notification Center, and assets to support the new 5K Retina iMacs.
Although cnBeta only has shots of Outlook to show, where Microsoft’s mail app goes, the rest of the Office suite follows. That means chances are pretty good Microsoft is already hard at work on similar versions of apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and so on.
The new Outlook also boasts a new icon design: an email, popping out of a door with the letter “O” on it. I actually really like it. I could see this icon design being extended with different colors, letters and document types to Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.
Sadly, there’s no official word yet on when this new flavor of Office for Mac will appear. Fingers crossed it’s soon: My copy of Word for Mac is getting pretty rough around the edges.
