Apple reportedly ceased the production of its FineWoven iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. Announced alongside the iPhone 15 series in September 2023, the woven material replaced leather in Apple’s accessories lineup.

However, users criticized the FineWoven material for its poor durability and in-hand feel. Its shortcomings became especially evident after a few weeks of use.

FineWoven replaced leather in Apple’s accessories lineup

Apple called FineWoven a leather replacement to make its products more eco-friendly. At launch, the company highlighted FineWoven’s “durable microtwill” material and “suedelike” feel. Apple says FineWoven is made from 68% post-consumer recycled material and has significantly lower carbon emissions than leather.

Following the introduction of FineWoven, the company stopped selling leather accessories altogether.

Apple has not officially announced the discontinuation of its FineWoven lineup of iPhone cases. But according to leaker Kosutami, Apple discontinued production of FineWoven accessories. You can still buy a case or Apple Watch band made from the material directly from the company’s online store, but likely only until stock runs out.

Apple’s leather replacement material has met with criticism

In the future, Apple seemingly plans to replace FineWoven with a different material, not go back to leather. Presumably, the company will announce the replacement material alongside the launch of the iPhone 16 later this year.

In the weeks and months following FineWoven cases’ availability, users grumbled about its poor durability and sub-par quality. Complaints centered on the material peeling off from the edges and the fabric showing scratches like an old CD.

This could have been a key factor behind Apple discontinuing the production of its FineWoven accessories.

This news should not bother you much if you own a FineWoven iPhone 15 case or Apple Watch band. If you are unhappy with its quality, try contacting Apple for a replacement. And if you have been looking to buy one for a while, you should see some good deals on third-party retailers in the coming weeks.
