Dell introduced new 34-inch and 40-inch ultra-wide, curved, high-resolution monitors Thursday ahead of CES 2024 in Las Vegas, including a big 5K screen that ratchets up the competition against Studio Display and other smaller 5K screens. Dell’s new monitors go on sale in late February.

Both screens are certified for eye comfort, but the larger one is “the world’s first 40-inch 5K monitor certified for five-star eye comfort,” the company said.

CES 2024: Dell rolls out 2 new curved ultra-wide displays certified for eye comfort

Dell’s two new wide, curved displays are notable for their large size with high resolution, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, speedy 120Hz refresh rate and new eye-comfort certification through testing organization TUV Rheinland.

The new Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U4025QW) is the world’s first of that size, 40 inches, certified for 5-star eye comfort, Dell said. Like the much smaller Studio Display, it features 5K resolution (5120 x 2160p) — rarely seen in big displays, though becoming more common with entrants from Dell, LG and Samsung. It also boasts VESA DisplayHDR 600 color, IPS Black Panel contrast and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity with up to 140 watts of power delivery for a laptop.

Of course, those top-shelf features don’t come cheap, with the big display listed at a starting price of $2,399.

The smaller, 34-inch Dell Ultrasharp 34 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3425WE) costs a more-modest $1,019.99. And you get more-modest features, of course. It packs sub-4K, WQHD resolution (3440 x 1440p) and offers TUV Rheinland five-star eye comfort certification, IPS Black technology and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity with up to 90W of power delivery.

Dell noted it partnered with TUV Rheinland on the new displays to enhance eye wellness.

“Dell’s UltraSharp monitors are the first to have TUV Rheinland five-star eye comfort certification, a new industry standard for eye comfort to help reduce signs of eye fatigue,” the company said.

Dell said it did three things to meet the emerging standard:

  • We doubled the refresh rate, going from a 60Hz to 120Hz refresh rate, to deliver smoother and sharper motion visuals.

  • We built in an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust screen brightness and color temperature according to ambient light condition. Recent studies show this can reduce the frequency of eye fatigue signs by 7% to 17% compared to a screen maintaining constant brightness.

  • We improved Dell ComfortView Plus by reducing harmful blue light exposures with more advanced LED backlight, going from 50% exposure to less than 35% exposure. Research shows this can reduce signs of eye fatigue by 8% after 50 minutes of performing a search task.
