Dual 5K displays and giant DIY desk distinguish this rig [Setups]

MacBook Pro setup
Cleaned, reorganized and beautifully underlit, this MacBook Pro and Studio Display rig is ready for work in the new year.

People often compare LG’s UltraFine 5K display to Apple’s Studio Display because they’re directly comparable, with the same size and resolution. But rarely do you find the two in the same setup. That makes today’s dual MacBook Pro and dual 5K display setup something of a rarity.

That, along with the rarely seen Wacom drawing tablet and the truly massive DIY desk, fashioned from a kitchen countertop and mechanized legs.

MacBook Pro drives dual Studio Displays in a setup with Wacom drawing tablet

Redditor dominicmannphoto (“DMP”) showcased the setup in a post entitled, “Cleaned and reorganised ready to return to work tomorrow.” Not that you can see much of it very clearly, given how dramatically (under) lit the photo is.

We last featured DMP setups back in November 2022 and April 2022, during previous changes. The more-recent one showcased the arrival of his Studio Display, which meant one of his older displays from his setup’s previous interation had to go.

2 MacBook Pros and a Wacom drawing tablet

He uses a personal 16-inch M1 Max, a work MacBook Pro and a Wacom Intuos Pro S drawing tablet, all on mounts. The Wacom drawing tablet is pretty well-known to creative professionals, but not to your average user.

Apparently Wacom has been in the digital pen business for 40 years. The instruments are known for their extreme touch sensitivity and the tablets allow plenty of customizability for shortcuts and such.

His laptops drive two 27-inch 5K displays — a Studio Display with a BenQ Screenbar Plus light on top and an LG UltraFine monitor — through a multiport Anker 577 Thunderbolt dock.

For input devices, he relies on a Logitech Craft wireless keyboard and a Logitech MX Master 3 wireless mouse with Aelfox wrist rests.

And a new add with the setup appears to be a Fosi BT Audio amplifier and a pair of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers (not in the photograph above because they’re under the desk while DMP messes with his mounts).

Moody lighting and huge DIY desk

As you can see, the lighting in the photo is moody to the max. That’s an effect achieved through supplementary lighting. It’s essentially just the effect of the wallpaper on the displays and Govee RBG light strip backlighting on the walls (with other lights turned off). DMP also keeps a Logitech Litra Glow light behind the desk to enhance his look on video calls.

It’s worth noting that DMP put together an unusually large desk from separate pieces. The base is a set of Uplift motorized legs and the top is a 96-inch solid wood countertop. One commenter noted with envy that they couldn’t find a desk larger than 73 inches. See options in the gear list below.

Not as good as Apple's Pro Display XDR, but the 27-inch Apple Studio Display packs an impressive panel coupled with a six-speaker system and studio-quality microphones.
